EN PRIMEURS 2023 - CHÂTEAU SOUTARD RELEASE Château Soutard, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, is one of the oldest properties of Saint-Emilion. Their 35 hectares contiguous vineyard is representative of the limestone plateau. Château Soutard’s wines have a subtle mixture of strength and elegance, witnessing the natural majesty of this wonderful terroir. Mild, the beginning of the year 2023 is marked by significant rainfall favoring both rapid vegetative development and strong mildew pressure. At the end of May, flowering is rapid. A rainy spring precedes a summer punctuated by two heat waves. Lively and with a beautiful tension, the palate combines aromas of citrus and fruits (red and black) with subtly powdery tannins. Discovering Lirac: A Gem of Rhône Terroir Lirac, one of the oldest wine appellations in the Southern Rhône Valley, boasts a unique terroir that shapes its exceptional wines. Located on the right bank of the Rhône River, Lirac’s vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate, with warm, sun-drenched days and the cooling influence of the mistral winds. The terroir is a harmonious blend of pebbly terraces, red clay, and sandy soils. These diverse soil types play a crucial role: Pebbles (galets roulés): Retain heat during the day, releasing it at night to promote ripening. Clay: Provides moisture retention, crucial during the region’s dry summers. Sandy soils: Contribute elegance and finesse to the wines. This diversity allows Lirac to produce stunning reds, whites, and rosés, each showcasing complexity and balance. The reds, often blends of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, are known for their structure, ripe fruit, and spicy undertones. The whites highlight floral and citrus notes, while the rosés charm with vibrant red fruit flavors. Lirac is a must-know appellation for wine enthusiasts seeking authenticity and quality from the Rhône Valley. #teroir #winelover #wineregions #sommelierjourney #sommelier #restaurant #rhone #frenchwine #wineknowledge

Exciting developments are unfolding in Champagne! 🍾 The new generation of Champagne makers is ushering in a wave of innovation, experimenting with advanced techniques both in the winery and the cellar. These visionary vintners are pushing boundaries with extended ageing processes and unique vinification methods, often moving away from traditional practices such as fining, filtration, and chaptalisation. They’re pioneering the use of low added sulphur to maintain the wine’s purity and authenticity. The use of diverse ageing vessels—ranging from oak barrels to concrete tanks and amphorae—is adding remarkable depth and complexity to their Champagnes. Furthermore, the use of natural yeasts is allowing for a true expression of the terroir and grape character. This blend of tradition and innovation is resulting in Champagnes that are more authentic, complex, and expressive than ever before. Discover the future of Champagne, where cutting-edge techniques meet time-honoured expertise. 🥂 #ChampagneInnovation #NextGenWinemakers #AdvancedVinification #GrowerChampagne #Redefined

WHY CHAMPAGNE IS WELL-PLACED TO WEATHER CLIMATE CHANGE A pair of insightful tastings led by leading cellar masters last month showed how Champagne is adapting to climate change, and why the famous fizz appears well-placed to weather further meteorological challenges. It’s not uncommon to read that Champagne, as one of the world’s most famous wines, is threatened by changing weather conditions in Europe, especially hotter summers, longer dry periods, and increasingly violent precipitation, from destructive hailstorms to erosive downpours. Of particular note are rising temperatures in the region, with heatwaves becoming a regular feature of the region, which is best-known for its relatively cool conditions, favouring the production of crisp and long-lived bottle-fermented sparkling wines – Champagne is loved worldwide because it is cellar-worthy and refreshing. Such an emphasis is placed on temperature as commentators wonder whether hotter conditions, which tend to produce riper grapes, will alter the nature of Champagne, reducing its mouth-watering acidic appeal, and age-worthiness too.
