🌟 Proud moment for IMPERATIVE 🌟 We’ve just earned a strong ex ante rating from BeZero Carbon for our South African Restoration Project! But what exactly does this mean? Think of it as getting a forecast on how effective our efforts will be in reducing carbon emissions before we fully roll them out. The rating from BeZero Carbon is based on their assessment of how likely our project is to achieve its carbon reduction goals. They use an eight-point alphabetic scale, ranging from ‘highest’ to ‘lowest’ likelihood, to convey their confidence in our project's ability to remove or avoid a tonne of CO2e. Receiving a strong rating means our South African Restoration Project is seen as very promising in its potential to capture and reduce carbon. This rating is a testament to our team's hard work and our commitment to impactful climate action. IMPERATIVE is proud to announce the receipt of our first ex ante carbon rating from BeZero Carbon. The first 10,000 hectare phase of Imperative’s recently sanctioned South African project, which at full scale will restore 100,000 hectares of land through active replanting of native thicket across a vast area in the Eastern and Western Capes of South Africa, has received an ex ante Standalone Carbon Rating of 'aa' and a BeZero Carbon ex ante Rating of 'Ae'. This ex ante rating puts Imperative’s Spekboom project amongst the highest rated Afforestation, Reforestation and Revegetation projects for which BeZero have issued ex ante ratings. This very strong rating serves as a significant external validation and endorsement of Imperative’s commitment to top-decile quality in our carbon credit projects. As execution progresses on the project, we aim to further increase the project’s rating. Did you know that an international company plans to start new large-scale opencast coal mining in one of New Zealand's most precious biodiversity hotspots – on public conservation land? And you might not have any say in whether it goes ahead. The National-led coalition Government is pushing through the Fast-track Approvals Bill, removing the public’s right to have a say, even on a series of massive coal mines. That’s why we’re opposing this anti-democratic law which overrides environmental bottom lines to allow environmentally damaging development. Bathurst Resources are a repeat environmental offender, receiving 27 abatement notices and a conviction and fine for polluting the habitat of New Zealand’s most endangered freshwater fish, the Canterbury mudfish, at its now-defunct Colgate Canterbury mine.    At Denniston on the West Coast they’ve already mapped out a huge haul road (and possibly a coal slurry pipeline), paving the way for multiple new mines. They’ve told investors they’ll be getting coal out of the Buller Plateau by 2026 and that this could be up to 4 million tonnes of coal a year – a huge increase that is incompatible with the needed rapid transition away from fossil fuels.   The Denniston Plateau is a biodiversity hotspot, home to species like the roroa great spotted kiwi, mātātā South Island fernbird, and the rare Avatar moth. In 2011, resource consent commissioners warned that, “From the evidence presented to us, it is abundantly clear that large scale mining is poised to invade the entire Denniston Plateau coal reserves which if unchecked, will totally destroy the ecosystems which are present.”    The Fast-track Approvals Bill would allow unchecked environmental destruction, and we cannot let it pass without a fight. New Zealanders deserve a say in decisions that impact our environment and future. Long-Term Environmental Health or Short-Term Economic Gains? That Is the Question 🧐 Here the opinion of the environmental scientist inside me: Norway's decision to permit the dumping of mining waste into its fjords deeply troubles me. It's widely recognized that fjords are unique ecosystems, exceptionally vulnerable to environmental changes. Additionally, they serve as vital food sources, providing fish like cod and salmon. After reading the article, a few things stuck in my mind: - 170 Million Tonnes of Waste 😳 Yes, it's real. Norway has authorized Nordic Mining to dump this colossal amount into the Førde fjord. This decision poses a severe threat to marine life and biodiversity. To put it into perspective, imagine 378 billion standard 0.5 kg bags of coffee or 462 billion cans of Coca-Cola. That's a lot of waste. - Following a court defeat, Environmental Organizations now face significant legal costs. This impedes their ability to appeal and continue advocating against environmentally harmful practices. - The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research, a principal advisory body, advised against such practices, highlighting the potential long-term damage to the fjord's ecosystem, crucial for species like cod and salmon. - Norway joins only two others in issuing new licenses for marine waste disposal. This is concerning, especially against the global trend of adopting more sustainable practices. - There are fears about the dispersion of fine particles beyond the intended area, possibly affecting the broader marine environment, not just the fjord. I have investigated heavy metals in fine particles, and yes, the particles move and can be transported far from its source spreading contamination to a larger area. The particles are in water and well, water flows. I know that Economic development and resource extraction are important, but not at the cost of ecological integrity. Norway's decision, a country with a profound maritime legacy, seems to contradict sustainable development and ocean stewardship principles. How can we encourage nations to prioritize long-term environmental health over short-term economic gains? It's essential to find a better disposal for the mining waste and the ecosystem is not the place.
