Nearly 70 years ago, the landmark decision of Brown v. Board of Education set a new course for education in America, declaring state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. This was not just a victory for those brave students and families who fought for their rights, but a beacon of hope for generations to come. Yet, the journey toward realizing the full promise of Brown v. Board continues. The Collegiate Black Male Network (The Collegiate Black Male Network) is preparing for our Founders Week celebration (February 4 - February 10) and are looking for your support. Annually, we host our conversation onThe State of The Educated Black Man. This is a roundtable discussion to highlight experiences of Educated Black Men. The theme for this year is "Letters To A Young Brother." This is a chance for professionals to share their insight and offer advice to young Black men, from their undergraduate experience. With this month being National Mentoring Month, it is only right to create such a space for young Black men. We are currently in search of four volunteer expert panelists who would be interested in speaking on their experience during this roundtable discussion. This is the first thing I have ever posted on this site. I am sorry it has to be about this. On March 1st of this year I graduation from the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center in Austin, TX. CCRC is a vocational training center for blind adults to learn the skills needed for a blind adult to live independently & return to work if they desire. Ostensibly the goal is for all students that go there to enter/re-enter the workforce. The facility is ran by the Texas Workforce Commission's Vocational Rehabilitation department under the Texas Department of Health & Human Services. My own experience at CCRC was great. I feel I got what I needed from my training. I am employeed & on a career path I am passionate about. I will soon begin classes at Texas State University w/ a goal of eventually attending law school. Unfortunatley not everyone has the same experience. While there. I heard from several fellow students about cases of racial profiling/discrimination. Many Black students are rushed thru their program. Sometimes they are inexplicably denied courses that every student is supposed to recieve. There are also cases of students, not just Black students, who are told they cannot progress further because they "failed" the final assessment of a technology course. They are not told what they missed. They are not given the chance to continue training or to re-assess. Concerns about personal safety while out in the community are often dismissed. Several female students related to me stories of men inappropriately touching them w/o consent on their orientation & mobility outings. They are frequently told sighted individuals will always be there to help. Even inside the center, there are reports that go unheeded about attempts to get female students drunk in order to take advantage of them. While I was there, we had several outbreaks of COVID. Students were pressured to return to their class schedule while sick. Sometimes forced to break quarantine & spread the illness further. I am sharing this video from Youtube from my friend & fellow former student Terry Thomas. He gives a brief overview of his experience including being forced to "graduate" before his program was complete & being escorted out of the building by armed guard w/o the opportunity to pack his belongings. Terry did nothing to deserve this. He was loved by students & instructors alike. He has posted 2 more videos of much longer length that go into more detail w/ reciepts. I will be sharing those as I finish watching them. Please give this a watch & share it. So far it has received some attention from Texas Workforce, but we are not seeing any responsibility being acknowledged by TWC. We do not believe anything will change until they are made to see that it gets widespread attention from important figures.

1. I don’t keep an actual bucket list, but if I did, having the opportunity to be on a panel at the Foundation For The Carolinas with Dorothy Counts-Scoggins, James Ferguson, Arthur Griffin while honoring the legacy of Julius Chamber to kickoff the Southern Education Foundation’s national conference would certainly be at the top of it. 2. Between integrating then Harding, what would become Irwin Avenue Elementary, my first school, being a lead attorney on the Swann (1971) and Capacchione (1999) cases that created and ended race based desegregation respectively, and being the board chair who made sure students like me had more access to AP and other higher level courses when I attended West Charlotte High School, each of these folks were instrumental in my journey of education advocacy. 3. I strongly encourage folks to study each of these individuals and their contributions that influenced not only Charlotte, but this nation. 4. When you say things like “no one is from Charlotte” and “there is no history in Charlotte,” you’re unintentionally exposing yourself as not truly researching and/or respecting the community you now inhabit. 5. Charlotte wasn’t created in the last 1-2 decades, as many newcomers are told. It’s had a long and rich history, that too many are eager to gloss over for what feels new and shiny. 6. It was truly humbling to share space with and listen to these historical giants who received sound but under-resourced educations in segregation discuss the resilience they demonstrated in work in the space not only of desegregation, but in the overall fight for educational equity and Civil Rights overall. 7. As I am now a public school parent whose oldest asked to come to this discussion, I am committed to honoring their legacies, grabbing the torch and fighting for opportunities for all children, but especially for the children this nation and the south, in particular, never intended to learn in the first place: Black children.
