👣 As I inch towards the 90-day mark of joining Tata Motors, here are some reflections inspired by a session by #donndoongaji called "Glimpses of Tata" as part of the Central Induction organised by #tatamotorsacademy. 👍 The Ethos of an organisation is the most powerful "branding" tool 👍 The Ethos/and the Organisation itself, is represented by its people 👍 Legacy offers rich learnings, and "pioneering" is in the dna of successful brands 👍 With every change of hands at Leadership level, the Ethos is passed as a baton 👍 With every change in external environment, the internal ecosystem has to move forward in a collective and agile manner; again, a shared Ethos is the driving force 👍 Ethos is role-modelled by Leaders, but leadership can be demonstrated without authority 👍 Each individual has a critical role to play, but at the same time diversity of thought and inclusive practices create a power that is larger than the sum of the parts. While I have had the privilege of being associated with two iconic Tata organisations in my career and have had close association through my formative years as well, I think these are lessons for any organisation that wants to thrive: Invest in your people, look at Leadership as an Organisational Superpower and watch the magic cascade through the entire value chain. I have always been greatly inspired by the remarkable persona of 𝐉.𝐑.𝐃. 𝐓𝐚𝐭𝐚. His book, "𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬," offers profound insights into his extraordinary life and accomplishments. J.R.D. Tata played a crucial role in nurturing a culture of strong values within the Tata Group, leaving behind a legacy that continues to flourish. It's wonderful to witness how Mr. Tata was able to instil this ethos and values within the company. With empowerment and delegation, he ensured his leaders upheld the right values. He showed great leadership by empowering his team and trusting them with responsibilities to uphold the right principles. Just like how stronger wolves protect the older and weaker ones in their pack, his leadership style also focuses on protecting and guiding his team. He has set an example and been an inspiration for generations to come. An uncle in my building, now 90+, was telling me about his working days. He worked for a long, long time with the Tata Group (nearly 35 years). In his stint, he had the opportunity to work with JRD Tata. He told me that for six years in the Group, he would write up documents and take Mr. Tata through them. Mr. Tata would end the meeting with, "Thank you so much." One day, a week before Mr. Tata left for Switzerland, he got up and shook hands with this uncle and said, "Thank you so much for everything." It was a departure from norm and surprised everyone in the room. A week or so later, Mr. Tata passed away. This uncle had tears in his eyes when he said that the final handshake was possibly the best thing he had had in his career - warm, genuine, true, and in a sense, everlasting. He asked me if I had ever worked with someone who made me want to become a better human being; who made me believe that it was possible; who was hero and parent. I didn't answer because the question was rhetorical. I didn't know Mr. Tata. But I know this uncle. I just think that however much we focus on leadership trainings and onboarding programs and engagement surveys, etc., maybe the world just used to be inhabited with a higher grade of people. It isn't anymore. We need to accept that and build on it. #reflection
