Spinout About:Energy has sponsored five teams entering the Formula Student engineering competition, which challenges students to design, build, test and race small-scale formula-style racing cars, powered by petrol engines or electric motors.   Run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (iMechE), Formula Student is one of Europe’s most established educational engineering competitions which uses motorsport to inspire students.   About:Energy will provide each with cutting-edge simulation tools and education resources to enhance battery pack design, driving engineering innovation in battery development in motorsports and the wider industry.  About:Energy, which span out of the University of Birmingham and Imperial College London in 2022, and the sponsorship includes teams from both. The company has a close history with Formula Student with several of its employees previously participating in the programme including Gavin White, CEO of About:Energy, who was Team Leader of Queen’s Formula Student team which placed as the fourth best UK team in 2018. He said: “Formula student is an incredible competition in which students get to apply skills learnt through school and university to a high-performance project. I thoroughly enjoyed my time leading the team at Queen’s in Belfast and it was there I learnt many of the professional skills which I now use every day as a founder/CEO. Kicking off our #TechTuesday posts with an update from our Technical department on what they’ve been working on recently!🔧 “These last weeks have seen a large influx of new talent to the technical team! Our new members have been working through our Junior Engineer program where they are given access to our tools and documents and learn the processes and software that we use to develop the car. Some have even started work on this year’s car! This week our current ICE engineers have made large strides in development of this year’s entry NV2. James (Engineer) has taken the chassis from a sketch to a workable model in record time and Luke (Engineer and Workshop Manager) is collaborating with him on this year’s engine mounting configuration. As a rookie team to Formula Student we still have many basic calculations to be realised as we are not iterating from a tested vehicle the year before or using any existing models. Ross, our mechanical lead, has unveiled his secret weapon: the Master Spreadsheet. “I feel like a rookie” A passionate mechanical engineering student recently confessed doubt while evaluating UMA courses - "I feel like a rookie." In our chat, I sensed deeper inhibition. He was struggling with knowledge gaps in areas like aerodynamics and CAD, doubting whether he had enough existing skills to meaningfully participate. It's a common dilemma for newcomers - perceived gaps in understanding breed imposter syndrome and loss of courage rather than fueling curiosity. Many thus shrink from racing dreams feeling unworthy. Yet mastery follows consistent passion with practical mileage. Gaps signal where to stretch, concepts reveal themselves through application over time if you lean in. So do not lose hope in the face of confusion but embrace adversity as the path itself. I urge our community - uplift those taking first steps, for we have all stumbled. Yet marching unified with purpose, self-compassion conquers rookie inhibition. The only mindset limiting potential is believing yourself undeserving of pursuing your deepest calling!
