#Happy to have contributed on the just published International Monetary Fund #Selected_Issues_Paper (SIP) under #2024_Article_IV_Consultation and the #Sixth_Review_Under_the_Extended_Credit_Facility_Arrangement for #DRC. #Warm thanks to the whole DRC team. #Strengthening_public_social_spending_in_DRC The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a country rich in natural resources, has a large population that is subject to significant social and economic disparities. Although progress has been made recently in terms of increased funding for social spending, efforts to reduce these inequalities remain insufficient and suffer from several challenges: domestic resources are limited; the quality and prioritization of spending remains poor; the credibility of social budgets remains concerning; and the persistent deficit in social infrastructure exacerbates the situation. This hampers the government's ability to provide essential services, including healthcare, education, and social protection. This context calls for the Government to step up its efforts in the social field. https://lnkd.in/dpJSx9r5

Total freedom fosters democracy and economic growth in Nigeria by ensuring leaders are accountable to the people, not external or internal forces. This independence promotes transparent governance, reduces corruption, and enhances public trust, leading to fair elections. Economically, it allows Nigeria to harness its resources, develop local industries, and attract equitable international investments. Empowering citizens and institutions drives sustainable development, creating a prosperous, self-reliant nation. #FredomFromAll #June12

⛓️In various African nations, the adherence to the separation of powers and the rule of law faces substantial challenges, impacting democratic stability. For instance, in Zimbabwe, the executive branch was known to exert undue influence on the judiciary, compromising its independence. This interference has resulted in questionable legal decisions, eroding trust in the rule of law. ⚖️Similarly, in Nigeria, unchecked legislative power led to the enactment of laws infringing on fundamental rights, perpetuating systemic inequalities and raising concerns about governance accountability. These examples underscore the critical need for upholding these principles to ensure fair governance and protect citizens' rights. ⚖️In the words of James Madison: “The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” #ruleoflaw #SeparationofPowers #goodgovernance

Democracy in Nigeria is more of a "democracy in voice" than a fully functional democracy in action. While the country has a democratic system in place, with regular elections and a constitution that enshrines democratic principles, the practice of democracy often falls short of the ideals. Nigeria struggles with challenges like corruption, electoral malpractices, weak institutions, political violence, clientelism, ethnic and religious divisions, economic underdevelopment, limited civic engagement, military interference, and external interference. These issues undermine the quality of democracy in Nigeria, making it more of a theoretical concept than a practical reality. The country still has work to do to bridge the gap between the promise of democracy and its practical implementation, ensuring that democracy is not just a voice, but a tangible force for good governance and development. ✍🏾

subsidies in Pakistan play a crucial role in perpetuating elite capture by providing economic benefits to powerful individuals and groups, distorting market dynamics, and reinforcing political influence through patronage. This system exacerbates socio-economic inequalities and undermines public trust in governance, creating a cycle that favors the elite while marginalizing the broader population. Addressing these issues requires a reevaluation of subsidy policies to ensure they promote equitable growth and serve the interests of all citizens rather than a select few.
