For the past five years renewable #IPP procurement in #Tunisia hasn’t worked. It now looks like a set of talented and dedicated officials have fixed that problem. The government has a new #energystrategy, the main objective of which is to strengthen #energysecurity and limit dependence on fossil fuels. The strategy sets a target of achieving 35% of #renewableenergy in the mix by 2030 and 50% by 2035. The really massive prize for investors – and perhaps also for the country – lies in exporting #greenenergy from Tunisia to Europe. But these projects depend on investors and offtakers seeing a stable #governance regime. So is this the time to commit? Solarcentury Africa has reached financial close for the Southern African Power Pool’s first merchant-only plant, the 20MWp Gerus solar PV IPP in Namibia. Industry analysts have long called for such developments to tackle the severe power crisis in southern Africa. The milestone development points the way to a new mode of power project development – sorely needed in southern Africa – provided utilities and regulators can keep up. SCA has three more IPPs at advanced development on the same model across the region. In a milestone moment for the newly unbundled South African #grid, Norwegian developer Scatec ASA has reached #financialclose on the Mogobe #battery #energystorage system (#Bess) project. Indian conglomerate Adani will finance, construct, and operate a number of #powertransmission lines and substations, under a 30-year, $737m deal with Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO). Sasol’s Msenge Emoyeni #wind farm has started commercial operations and is supplying power to the company’s Sasolburg site in the Free State, wheeled through the national grid.
