A manufacturing company in Ghana ordered a modern equipment from a supplier in France last year. When the equipment arrived, the supplier sent a specialist to Ghana to help in commissioning it. The chief engineer of the company assigned two technicians to work with the specialist on the project. On the first day of the project, the most senior technician vanished as soon as they got to the site. It was a tedious job and he wasn’t motivated to do it. He left the other technician with the specialist. The two worked together on the project. The technician worked hard and showed initiative. They talked about many things and got to know each other beyond the commissioning project. The project was successful. The day before the specialist departed site, he said this to the technician: “I’ve loved your work ethics and I’m impressed by your attitude. We need people like you, I’ll tell my boss about you”. The rest as they say, is history. Today that young man works for the French company as a Field Engineer for West & North Africa. He did his best on what others thought was uninspiring work. He worked where others didn’t want to. And his breakthrough came at a time and in a way that he never expected nor imagined. Sometimes life will throw you into situations that everyone runs from, into works that no one likes to do.
