🎎The #Japanese_textile tradition is renowned for its intricate designs achieved through a variety of dyeing techniques, including kasuri, shibori, and paste-resist dyeing. These techniques are often combined within a single textile, resulting in exceptionally elaborate creations. 📑This paper delves into the technical aspects and complexities of these methods, highlighting the dynamic interplay between tradition and innovation in Japanese textile production. The authors’ scientific endeavour focused on some textiles dating between the 19th and 20th centuries and belonging to the Montgomery Collection of Japanese folk art. Employing non-invasive techniques such as visible reflectance spectroscopy and ER-FTIR #spectroscopy, authors uncovered key insights into the materials and methods utilized in the creation of these textiles. The analysis revealed a diverse array of #pigments and #dyes, including plant-derived, inorganic, and synthetic variants. These findings illuminate the cultural syncretism between traditional Japanese practices and the adoption of new materials from the West, underscoring the dynamic nature of textile production in Japan. 👉📖 https://brnw.ch/21wQcgA 🧵 Furthermore, ER-FTIR spectroscopy elucidated the predominant use of cotton as the primary fibre in the textiles, aligning with historical records of Japan’s role as a major producer of cotton yarn. Additionally, the detection of Western-derived dyeing method (utsushi-yūzen) and free-hand painting (kaki-e), offers insights into the diversity of dyeing practices employed by Japanese artisans. The presence of proteinaceous materials and synthetic dyes observed in some textiles has implications for conservation practices, suggesting the need for tailored approaches to ensure the preservation of these culturally significant artifacts. Overall, these scientific results shed new light on the materials, techniques, and cultural contexts underlying Japanese textile production, advancing our understanding of this rich artistic heritage and informing future research endeavours in textile science and conservation.

𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞-𝐔𝐩 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐄𝐓 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 These small, uniform, and semi-crystalline granules are typically white or off-white in color, with a smooth, glossy surface. Depending on their application, they may range from translucent to slightly opaque. Common uses include fiber-grade, bottle-grade, and film-grade production. For example, fiber-grade PET chips can appear super bright, bright, or dull, depending on the concentration of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Super-bright chips are colorless and transparent, while semi-dull ones have an off-white hue due to TiO2 Visualize PET chips up close in a clean, organized presentation—perfect for showcasing their purity and consistency. 📜🇨🇳 An interesting share about #papermaking, which originated in #China and has a rich traditional process. The birth of paper, as we know it today, occurred during the Eastern Han period (25–220 AD). Ts’ai, a court official, is traditionally credited with inventing the papermaking process. Initially, paper was crafted from a plant-puree mixture produced by pulp mills and paper mills. Over time, this technique spread to other parts of the world, gradually replacing materials like papyrus. Remarkably, the ancient Chinese papermaking #tradition endures even today as a family #industry.” 🌟

Compared with the stratospheric amount of clothing produced worldwide, processed textiles represent a small percentage. However, the legally designated ‘textile waste’ goes through a whole sorting process aiming for a second chance. 📍 Of all the goods passing through our Sorting Center, 77% (current figures) get the chance to be reused either in our stores in Europe or as exported clothing to other clients in Europe, Africa, Asia or Latin America. ♻️ Another 20% of nonreusable goods continue to different processes to be recycled. Slovakia, Italy, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland and other locations process all recyclable materials seeking a repurposed future. Only 3% of the total cannot be reused or recycled, but it is mainly used as Solid Recovery Fuel. ❗Many challenges must be overcome during this process as the textile industry is rapidly growing and its quality is decreasing. When I joined the carpet manufacturing company that I'm working for about 2.7 years ago, I stumbled upon a draft of an English agreement they used for foreign customers. Hilariously, they had no clue what they were using. For example, they had used "maps" instead of "designs" and “shoulder” (yes, the body part) instead of “reed” because both words translate the same in Persian. They relied on Google Translate for these gems. I can only imagine the foreign customers’ faces when they came to Iran to sign this masterpiece. It was a real piece of work! #CarpetManufacturing #TranslationFails #BusinessHumor #LostInTranslation #Iranianbusiness #LanguageMatters
