80% of Homes are Fostering Chronic Illness | Dr. Scott McMahon & Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker | EP 415 Dr. Jordan B. Peterson speaks with Dr. Scott McMahon and Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker. They discuss their potentially groundbreaking research into CIRS, or Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. Backed by research, these two doctors believe that many other illnesses and syndromes such as fibromyalgia, obesity, and even depression might actually be caused by mutations in common mold as a response to our own efforts to live in a hypoallergenic world. Scott W. McMahon, MD, founder of Whole World Healthcare has been practicing pediatrics in Roswell, New Mexico, for 26 years. His interest in Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) began in 2009. Dr. McMahon first learned about CIRS after being approached by a businessman whose daughter became ill while attending a local school. The search for this child’s healing led him to Dr. Richie Shoemaker, the global expert on mold illnesses. McMahon visited Dr. Shoemaker’s practice to learn about the treatment for CIRS and saw the tremendous need for more physicians prepared to treat CIRS. He immediately opened a practice in Roswell specifically to diagnose and treat patients with CIRS, starting with 15 patients from the local school. His CIRS practice has now grown and he has seen thousands of adults and children to date. Health Equity Advocate|Speaker| Author|Consultant| Physician: Neonatal Medicine, Pediatric Palliative Care
Founded by BMMA, Black Maternal Health Week is a week of awareness, activism, and community-building aimed at amplifying the voices of Black Mamas and centering the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements. BMHW is held annually in April during National Minority Health Month. #BMHW24 is, above all, a week dedicated to educating and advocating for Black Mamas. Through a series of digital events and community engagement, BMHW uplifts Black womenled organizations to focus on the root causes of poor maternal health outcomes, while engaging Black voices to lead immediate conversations around community-driven policies and programs. I'm often asked why I do so much work around Black Maternal Health as a Neonatologist and a Pediatric Palliative Care Provider...the question makes me smile because it gives me an opportunity to remind other that babies don't arrive here alone. They come from mothers and birthing people who come from families who come from communities all of which are impacted by adverse birth outcomes. When I meet a family in the hospital impacted by an adverse birth outcome I immediately immersed in their story..what could we have done differently and how can we make their next experience better. Many times there is nothing that could have been done differently, but friends more often than not, especially for BIPOC families there is quite a bit that could have been done differently. Let's change the narrative! #BMHW24 #BlackMaternalHealthWeek #MaternalEquity #ReproJustice #BMMA

I had the priviledge of presenting at UNICEF's SBC Talking Change webinar on 25th June, discussing Türkiye's innovative use of Motivational Interviewing techniques to enhance Infant and Young Child Feeding practices post the 2023 earthquake. Our initiative integrated MI into IYCF counseling at UNICEF supported Mother Baby Corners (MBC), resulting in a 25% increase in breastfeeding rates and a 35% improvement in complementary feeding practices. This approach reflects our commitment to improving maternal and child health through innovative strategies, focusing on influencing attitudes and behaviors. In Türkiye, challenges such as inadequate private spaces for breastfeeding and a shortage of skilled counselors drove our innovative approach. By integrating MI into IYCF counselor training, we aimed to enhance counseling effectiveness and promote positive IYCF behaviors among mothers. Results from a 6-week implementation in Malatya and Kahramanmaraş showed increased self-efficacy and readiness to change in the intervention group, emphasizing MI's potential in enhancing IYCF practices in humanitarian settings. UNICEF has now integrated MI techniques into IYCF counselor training in Türkiye. #Unicefturkiye #SBC #InfantandYoungChildFeeding #MaternalHealth #ChildHealth #Innovation #MotivationalInterviewing

One of the great joys of working at the Gates Foundation is being able to highlight the incredible work of our partners. And as we approach Mother’s Day, I can’t think of any partner better to highlight than MamaYe Nigeria. Across sub-Saharan Africa, more than 550 women die each day from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth and 2,800 newborns lose their lives. The vast majority of those deaths could be prevented with better access to skilled care at birth, emergency obstetric services, and better family planning. And that is where MamaYe comes in with a simple but powerful approach to its work in Nigeria and Kenya. Working with governments, civil society, and health practitioners, MamaYe uses data and evidence to drive change. First, they try to clearly identify the reasons why women and babies are dying and synthesize these findings. Next, they work with the whole range of stakeholders to reach agreement on how resources can be used most effectively to address these causes. And lastly, and this is an important one, they and their partners advocate and make the case for these needed changes. Equipping grassroots advocates with good sound data to make their case is powerful, practical, and a great example that we don’t always need the most complicated methods to achieve big change – in this case saving the lives of mothers and their newborns. And I think that is a Mother Day’s message around which we can all rally. To learn more, check out this fantastic video about MamaYe. https://lnkd.in/ek4y7T7T

Excited to share my research, "Exploring the perception of Afghan childbearing women about respectful maternity care," published in the International Journal of Scientific Reports. This study uncovers the challenges Afghan women face during childbirth, including mistreatment and lack of dignity in healthcare settings. It highlights the urgent need for Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) to improve maternal health outcomes in Afghanistan. Here is the link for the article: https://lnkd.in/gFA2Whs5

"Community-based interventions are crucial in this work. Communities have the answers, and it is incumbent on dominant systems and organizations to support and amplify the solutions that communities have identified and built. This includes supporting efforts focused on improving access to care, education, affordable housing, nutritious food, and economic opportunities." Read more in the Sahan Journal about understanding and improving Black maternal health, including how #granteepartners African American Babies Coalition and Roots Community Birth Center are leaders in this important work. #BlackMaternalHealthWeek #BirthEquity https://lnkd.in/ggtDTWJq

Military spouses! Do you want to improve obstetric care at military hospitals and have better options through TRICARE?? "When I go on a home visit, and I see where some of these women give birth, sometimes, I come back in tears.", shares Nurse Tamar, Journey to 9 (J9) program coordinator and co-author of a recently published research article on the impact of the J9 model of care. In their research article, published in PLOS One scientific journal, members of the J9 team studied moms and babies born in 2019 at the Mirebalais University Hospital (HUM). They compared the those that participated in the J9 program with those that received usual care at the hospital. 6 years after Zanmi Lasante, as Partners In Health is known in Haiti, introduced the J9 program in Haiti, 2,800 pairs of mothers and babies have graduated and have been impacted by this program.
