Over the past 2 weeks, Export Connect has delivered a number of projects on behalf of our state industry partners. Our engagement with the Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development which commenced in May, is now moving towards completion, as we have finalised pitch decks for 19 suppliers and will shortly be preparing them for buyer meetings across the retail, food service and liquor industries in WA and the eastern seaboard. With Fine Food Australia in four weeks time, further projects were undertaken on behalf of Investment NSW as well as Global Victoria and Food & Drink Victoria to help prepare in excess of 20 food and beverage suppliers, including distillers, who will be participating under their respective states’ stands. The preparation included both a face-to-face workshop, as well as a webinar, covering domestic and international market development, retail, food service and liquor channel trends, understanding what buyers are looking for, pitch deck preparation, followed up with marketing and promoting your stand at Fine Foods. Rounding out this trifecta of projects has been a further initiative of Global Victoria, who are running a spirits capability building program, which includes 15 spirits buyers from a number of Asian markets visiting Melbourne and regional Victoria from 12th August, to understand more about our spirits industry and distillers behind them, where the expectation is a number of the distillers will open up new export markets. The program involved Export Connect meeting with 18 distillers across whisky, gin, rum, vodka and RTD’s, followed up with meetings of the 15 inbound buyers to obtain insights as to their respective markets and categories of interest, finishing off with a webinar to present the findings to a number of the spirits suppliers. It is pleasing to note, that based on very positive feedback from the participants across all these different programs, Export Connect is continuing to deliver outstanding value for both state industry partners as well as suppliers looking to promote their presence across domestic and international markets. Well this is awkward... Let me first preface this with a huge thanks to everyone, worldwide, who freely purchases, retails and distributes our range of The House of Botanicals Gins, Pietro Nicola Aperitivi & Digestivo, and in this case Dr. Adam's Cocktail Bitters. As a wee independent business based in the North East of Scotland, it's pretty nuts to see our name in the top 10 for both Best Selling and Top Trending brands. However my opinion on the annual brand report remains unchanged as context needs to be given, especially so in a world dominated by conglomerates and a pay-to-play approach with brands buying up listings and menu spaces; something we have never done and will never do under my watch. Unless I'm mistaken this is the first year the report has featured ten brands in the cocktail bitters section, with it only featuring five previously, but it's quite incredible we're there considering we're up against the likes of Angostura (market leader by some distance for a number of reasons), Peychaud's, Regan's and Bittermens (all Sazerac owned) and Fee Brothers (over 100+ years in operation). As we move into the new year I've been carrying out my own year-end analysis, and have found our sales for 2023 finally hit pre-pandemic numbers for the likes of Boker's Bitters, Orinoco Aromatic Bitters, Aphrodite Bitters and Teapot Bitters, which was very surprising given our inability to travel, loss of trade, and lack of any sort of advertising and marketing budget; a consequence of Brexit, business closures and the pandemic. Overall our sales to the on-trade are down massively but it was to be expected with the hospitality world getting back to its feet after COVID and many of our distribution partners still finding their way now things are moving again. I'm also abundantly aware I've somewhat 'neglected' promotion of our cocktail bitters range as our business has naturally shifted to a more balanced consumer focus; aligning with the move to at home drinking, and our Gins and Aperitivi & Digestivo (both newer to the market) taking centre stage. Pre-pandemic - and bearing in mind we opened our shop & tasting room in January 2020 - our sales were around 90% on-trade and 10% direct-to-consumer, however that's closer to 50%-50% now. A large focus for the year ahead is to once again grow in the on-trade by hopefully visiting bars and attending trade shows, and this update from Drinks International is pretty heart-warming as it shows the business is still in the hearts and minds of bartenders across the globe. You really need to try our Gins and Aperitivi though... 😉
