𝐌𝐀𝐅𝐍 𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓: Susan Schneider https://lnkd.in/evjD-d93 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 / 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫? I became a facilitator in my federal position organically. I had a long federal career in the Department of Health and Human Services. During my last organizational change, I chose the option closest to home. My son was just 18 months old, so he was my priority. It was a federal statistical agency. I’m not “mathy.” My motivation to be of USE to the organization led me to change roles; essentially to fit in as well as I could. Opportunities to facilitate meetings grew out of preparing agendas and organizing materials for our 25-person team. As time passed, I retooled myself, updated my academic credentials (EdM Education and MS Library and Information Science) with two graduate certificates (Teaching the Adult Learner and Evidence-Based Coaching). Did I mention that my portrait is in the dictionary under “Lifelong Learner”? I earned my ICF certification at the ACC level coaching people in the arts and federal settings. 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫. I definitely have a favorite! It was a full-day offsite in-person retreat for eight managers. Not only was their work process changing, but the inputs (in this case, healthcare information) were changing dramatically. Management was very concerned that staff would resist the changes. After an hour or so of discussion, I realized that a concrete depiction of the concern might serve as a “reality check.” Time for the flip chart paper and sticky notes! I drew a line about 12 feet wide over five flip charts, with the left end labeled very resistant and the right end ready for change. Each manager had a different-colored pad of sticky notes. On each sticky note, the manager wrote the initials of one of their staffers. Next, the managers placed each sticky note on the spectrum/line indicating where they believed each staffer belonged. We stepped back and looked at the graphic we’d created. It took a while to realize that resistance to change was not as widespread as assumed the hour before. Importantly, the leftmost quarter of the spectrum had fewer staff members than feared, and more than half the staff were open to or ready for change! We then brainstormed approaches to nurturing readiness for change, and reinforcing positive ideas and implementation. Here's my column from the most recent publication of the in-house Magazine for the Pyramus & Thisbe Society. TL;DR - If you're a member of any organisation and you have the energy and passion for that organisation; act positively and proactively and get involved. If you are a member of any organisation and you think that there is room for improvements, tweaks or feel that you have passion, insight or knowledge of a subject which should be shared; do something positive about it and get involved. As examples , join a committee or working group and help promote any changes that are required as a positive step or if you are a recognised expert in a certain field, share that knowledge with others and improve understanding. Any organisation is only as good as the engagement of its membership.

Enhance your Leadership at this upcoming workshop. - What does it take for a successful implementation of Signs of Safety®? - What are important evaluation measures to determine the effectiveness of implementation? - The Leadership Imperative: how do you lead and manage whole system cultural and organizational change? What do you hold on to? What can you let go? - What happens when your agency gets stuck with progress? What needs to happen to get unstuck and keep going? - Transformation is not magic dust — how do we move into sustainability? What does this look like? Guest Speaker: Eileen Munro Professor Eileen Munro, Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics. Professor Munro has researched and written extensively on how to improve reasoning in child protection work, covering how best to combine intuitive and analytic reasoning and also on the importance of understanding how the organisational system influences workers’ actions. In 2011, she completed the Munro Review of the English Child Protection System and subsequently was able to test the feasibility of her recommendations by conducting action research with the Signs of Safety organisation as they sought to implement them and improve practice with families in ten English agencies. Returning to her roots in philosophy, Eileen was a member of a team project that explored the implications of complex causality for using research findings in a new location and how this challenges traditional evidence-based practice. She is currently continuing this line of research with Professor Nancy Cartwright with funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. This event is for: CEOs, COO/DOSs, Service Directors and Senior Leaders. Places will be limited so register your interest today for this exciting opportunity to meet, share, network and learn together! Register Ticket price is CAD$25 per person and includes lunch (vegan and vegetarian options available) Tickets go on sale on Friday 16 February at 8:00am EST. Click here to purchase.

Humanizing Strategy | Helping social profit leaders navigate change through participatory planning that aligns their team, improves morale, and helps everyone buy in to the goals of the organization.
We've finally taken the time to document the incredible work that we're truly grateful to have been a part of, and we are excited to share it with everyone. This first one I'm sharing is in partnership with the University of Ottawa and St. Michael's Hospital...and more. It was a collaborative effort in every sense of the word! This initiative not only brought together multiple organizations, but the participants were also incredibly diverse. They included healthcare practitioners, policymakers, academics, and members of the African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities. I've adopted several approaches from Reos Partners, a global leader in the art and science of systemic change. I've learned a lot on applying 'radical collaboration' to upgrade the capacity of multistakeholder collaborations. ...and of course, Technology of Participation (ToP) facilitation methods. This type of collaboration bridges divides, embraces uncertainty and bring diverse strengths to the table. This approach includes: - Finding necessary allies - Sharing hopeful stories - Building collective power - Discovering ways forward - Not ignoring interdependencies When radical collaboration is applied, it provides an amplified, collective benefit. Check out the link in the comments to explore the case study. #facilitator #facilitation #facilitate #collaboration

Why do you choose to work in your current field? Why do you prioritize certain tasks over others? Why do you feel passionate about certain causes? Why do you spend time with certain people? Why do you set specific goals for yourself? Why do you enjoy certain activities? Why do you seek out new experiences? Why do you make certain decisions? Why do you feel grateful for certain aspects of your life? Why do you feel anxious about certain situations?" Why do you find joy in helping others? Why do you prioritize self-care? Why do you seek personal growth and development? Why do you believe in certain values? Why do you pursue learning and education? Why do you seek inspiration and creativity in your life?
