Fifty-five years ago today, #Apollo11 astronauts began their journey to the moon. Our country united around President Kennedy’s call to action in 1962, and after seven years of collective effort, the first human walked on the moon. We turned what some thought was impossible into a reality. With so many longstanding challenges in education intensified by the pandemic, I am particularly inspired by the story of Apollo 11. I believe we can come together as a country to meet the moment in education the way we did in 1969 to put a man on the moon. We can launch a moonshot for education with urgency, innovation, creativity, and partnership. We can create an education system that prepares all students to lead lives of choice and opportunity. As we remember one of our country's most significant accomplishments this week, let’s reflect on what we’ve learned about how to do hard things together. Let’s envision an education system that allows all students to unleash their fullest potential, and then work together to make it a reality.
