Team & Leadership Coach for Not-For-Profit and Social Enterprises | Working with good people to overcome workforce challenges | Leadership Learning & Development | Team effectiveness and outcomes-driven approach
Don't shoot the dog. Especially not the champion one. She's heading to Geelong next week. She'll be joining 300 other sheepdogs taking on more than 1000 sheep in Australia's biggest working sheepdog event at Geelong showgrounds. Event link in comments. There's a lot to learn from working with a working dog, that is transferrable to working with working humans. Firstly don't shoot 'em. The champion sheepdog handlers always talk about 'EDUCATING THE DOG', not training them. This means the dog has its natural instinct to do its best work, and as a handler, you educate the dog to do that work for you, in the way you want it done. Isn't that how we need to work with/'educate' the humans we lead??? What are your thoughts on the dogs and human comparison? Anyway, next week Sep 7-15, you'll see the best working sheepdogs and their handlers competing to be Australia's Supreme Champion. You'll also get to see Australia handlers compete against New Zealand handlers for the Wayleggo Cup. #musterdogs #dogs #leadingpeople #event #geelong

🎆 Celebrating July 4th with Happy and Healthy Horses! 🐴 The Fourth of July is a great time to celebrate independence and freedom, but it is also a time that can be stressful for people and animals alike. At Gateway HorseWorks, we prioritize the well-being of our herd members during the holiday. Here are the four practices we have in place for the Fourth of July to ensure our horses stay safe and calm during the fireworks and festivities. Proactive Horse Care: Our horses receive a healthy meal with electrolytes to keep them hydrated before the start of the fireworks. Maintaining Routine: To reduce added stress from a change in routine, the horses’ daily schedule, from the time they eat dinner to the time they go outside is kept the same, as every other day. Secure Environment: We ensure the fencing in the pastures is secure to prevent the horses from escaping if startled by loud noises. Our horse’s also have access to a large run-in with fans which help to dull the noise of fireworks. Celebrating Together: Some of our staff celebrate the holiday right here at the farm, enjoying a quiet evening watching over the horses in case they get overwhelmed and need to come into the barn. It’s a wonderful opportunity to observe our horses and ensure they feel secure amidst the festivities while also spending time together as a team. By incorporating these strategies, we ensure our horses have a stress-free Fourth of July celebration alongside our staff members. Our team at Gateway HorseWorks wishes you all a healthy and safe fourth of July! #GatewayHorseWorks #FourthOfJuly #HorseCare #FireworksSafety #EquineHealth

We can learn a lot from the natural instincts of other species behaviors. I was scuba diving yesterday and saw the most amazing sight. It is called a bait ball. when small fish swarm in a tightly packed spherical formation about a common center. It is a last-ditch defensive measure adopted by small schooling fish when they are threatened by predators. In this case it was a bait WALL. Literally about 30 feet wide by 100 feet long. One of the most impressive sights I have seen underwater. Bait balls work as a cohesive unit with everyone playing their role. The fish in the middle are like the operators. They have no idea what is going on or if a predator is nearby, they just swim. The fish on the outside are in constant lookout for predators. Within the school itself, there is no centralized intelligence aware of how the school has configured itself. Rather, the schooling behavior is the consequence of relatively simple rules followed by each individual fish in the school, such as remaining close together, moving in the same direction, and avoiding collisions with each other. As teams, we could stand to follow similar less choreographed rules. Move in the same direction and don't step on each other's toes. Help each other out. The bait ball reacts to movements from a predator with lightning reflexes, rhythmically streaming up and down with rapid direction changes. When a predator approaches, they can split and re-form behind the predator. In our case, they split around us until they realized we were not a threat and they re-formed. Similarly, when competition is threatening, react swiftly, but don't veer too much from your north star. Re-form and continue down the path you know will help you grow your company. https://lnkd.in/g9gtpsEx

Veterinary Human Factor Advocate with focus on human skills, wellbeing and culture. Collaborator, advocate, podcaster, leader | European Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging
Thinking about pressure transfer, human motivation, stress and compassion following this interesting and deeply insightful post by Martin Whiting reflecting on the question of leadership and role-modelling following the release of the video showing a horse being repeatedly whipped by an Olympic dressage champion. For me, it brought up the question what role culture and the larger system play in incidents like these. Even though I am not a psychologist, I have plenty of lived experience and have read widely enough to know that human behaviour and decision-making (including my own!) is sometimes messy and complex. Pressures can be intrinsic or extrinsic, explicit or implicit and they can either be passed on or not as either explicit or implicit physical or verbal pressures, threats or in the worst case violence. We often don't know what made people behave in certain ways, but it seems to me that people often do what they do because - at least at some level - it makes sense to them at the time. As fallible humans, we sometimes get things awfully wrong and even if the 'wrong' thing made sense to us at the time and there may be external circumstances that influence our behaviour and decisions on a subconscious level, our behavioural choices are ultimately our responsibility. And therefore it is indeed a question of showing leadership, reflect on our behaviours and align them with our values, and accept responsibility without trivialisation when we make the wrong call. On the other hand it is also important to look at the wider system and culture in which we operate. If we want to incentivise people to motivate others - be it animals or other humans - to constructively collaborate rather than by using aversive methods, we need to build systems which reward not only the measurable outcomes but also how these outcomes are achieved. Animal and human welfare are interlinked. Proactively and consciously building compassionate, collaborative and psychologically safe cultures will ultimately benefit animals as much as the humans within them, and achieve performance in a way that does not erode trust. And they make it easier to do the 'right' thing more often, including speaking up when noticing behaviour that falls short of compassion and respect for other beings. #veterinarymedicine #animalwelfare #veterinarymentalhealth #compassionateleadership #psychologicalsafety #veterinaryhumanfactors

Charlotte Dujardin whips horse 24 times in shocking video king video This is the headline that caught me today. The link is below if you want to watch it. But needless to say the headline is accurate and admissions are made to support it. I understand the pressures we put underseleves under to perform, and the olympics would be a very powerful source of that pressure for an individual. But this is where leadership and role-modeling play their key part. Our pressures are not someone else’s pressure and are not transferrable. 1) when pressure is present, it is your time to show leadership and demonstrate the value you uphold to the others around you. That applies as much to the animals we work with as the people. Our change response to pressure is a reflection of us, not a reflection of them. So display or enhance your true nature at times of stress. 2) when you get it wrong, and we are all human and get things wrong, admit it, accept it, apologise for it and move forward in a better way. It is correct to be “deeply ashamed” of poor choices, but to trivialise it as a “lapse in judgement” minimises the role we play in leadership and role-modelling to others. I know the #equine world is tight. And personal experience has taught me that when you #whistleblow for breaches of standards you will get backlash. But I implore anyone who sees such flagrant abuses of the trust placed in the animal care leadership to step forward and be heard. It is only by exposure of such poor behaviour we can learn to grow and be better people. No one is above reproach. #animalwelfare #AnimalEthics #ECAWBM #horse #horsewelfare #CharlotteDujardin https://lnkd.in/e2jWuz3V
