In March 2020, Team Consulting was challenged by the UK Government to rapidly develop and manufacture safety critical ventilators in response to Covid-19. Looking back, we can reflect on how much can be achieved in such a short timeframe with a multi-disciplinary team and lots of ingenuity. Working within an unprecedented timeline, we rapidly developed the Emergency Ventilator Apparatus (EVA 1.5), with the design frozen in 4 weeks and verification, transfer to manufacture and technical file generation completed in 6 weeks. The full EVA 1.5 design and development history was then transferred to the UK Government and the Crown. Here are some key highlights from the project: 𝗔𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: we used an agile approach to manage multiple concurrent development activities, including mechanical design, pneumatics, software, industrial design and more 𝗥𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: by adapting an existing ventilator and using a large, dedicated and multidisciplinary team, the EVA 1.5 was design frozen in 4 weeks, manufacturing and technical file generation in 6 weeks 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿-𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: by collaborating with clinicians, we ensured to integrate simple and clear instructions for ease of use by potentially less experienced personnel under emergency conditions 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: we created a new technical file from scratch due to regulatory requirements, ensuring full compliance with medical device standards Read the full case study here: https://lnkd.in/e_C8yg7u #medicaldevices #medicaltechnology #healthcareinnovation

In the world of precision engineering, where tolerances are often measured in microns, quality inspection is not just a step in the manufacturing process – it’s a critical safeguard that ensures the reliability, safety, and performance of every component produced. RST works with industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical devices and telecommunications where even the slightest deviation from specifications can lead to significant consequences, so we need to be sure our quality inspection is on the money. One of the primary goals of our Quality Inspection team is to verify that each component meets its specified dimensional tolerances. In precision engineering, the components that we make often need to fit together perfectly in complex assemblies. Our quality inspection team use advanced coordinate measuring machines (CMM’s), laser scanners and optical comparators to check the integrity and accuracy of our components. In addition, our quality inspection processes include material testing, to identify any internal defects such as cracks, voids, or inclusions, that could compromise the component's structural integrity. Quality inspection also includes the evaluation of surface roughness, waviness, and texture ensuring that the surface finish meets the required specifications. Precision engineering components are often subject to stringent industry standards and regulations, particularly in the sectors we work with, such as aerospace, medical devices and telecommunications. Our quality inspection team must ensure that the components we produce comply with these standards and be able to supply the relevant documentation and traceability, ensuring that every step of the manufacturing process is recorded and audited. As a business we have both BS EN ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D accreditations, meaning that we are recognised for our quality management systems across general precision engineering services and also with the aerospace sector. The Quality team are a key part of RST Engineering and as such they see every single job that comes through the business. Every component that we manufacture goes through our temperature-controlled facility for cleaning and inspection to ensure that the end product to the customer is of the highest standard and accuracy.
