GET TO KNOW: BETTY FRIEDAN (1921 - 2006) Bettye Naomi Goldstein was a feminist author and activist, and one of the early leaders of the women’s rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Her work ignited the second wave of American feminism, inspiring millions of women to challenge the status quo and fight for equality. Her groundbreaking book, The Feminine Mystique (1963), exposed the limitations placed on women through the idealised image of the happy housewife. This influential book resonated deeply with countless women, giving voice to their frustrations and yearning for fulfilment beyond domesticity. It sparked a national conversation about women’s rights and paved the way for a social and political movement. In 1966, Friedan co-founded the National Organization for Women (NOW), a landmark organization dedicated to achieving legal and social equality for all women. As NOW’s first president, she led the fight for equal pay, reproductive rights, and political participation for women. NOW’s first action was to demand that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission enforce the provisions of Title VII, guaranteeing equality in employment and ending sex-segregated employment. Betty’s activism extended beyond NOW. She helped establish the National Women’s Political Caucus and was a key organiser of the Women’s Strike for Equality in 1970, which brought thousands of women together to demand equal opportunities and rights. Her relentless advocacy and strategic vision helped transform the landscape of American society, creating greater opportunities for women in all spheres. Betty Friedan’s legacy is one of empowerment and transformation. She challenged societal norms and inspired women to redefine their roles in society. In 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention marked the beginning of a pivotal movement for women’s rights in the United States. Just two weeks later, a larger gathering in Rochester, N.Y., continued the momentum. These conventions became annual national events, fueling the growing women’s suffrage movement and culminating in the adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted American women the constitutionally protected right to vote. Women’s Equality Day recognizes the passage of the 19th Amendment, extending voting rights to women in 1920. This event culminated in a 72-year, peaceful campaign formally beginning in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. Even though the 19th Amendment extended voting rights to women, only white women were allowed to vote. Despite this necessary constitutional amendment, women in the US have continued to face various barriers based on their intersectional identities. Gender, race, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, nationality, language, and religion are determinant factors in shaping women’s experiences, which is why women in Greater Toledo need to discuss how gender-based oppression intersects with other forms of discrimination. LinkedIn wanted me to tell you about who I want to celebrate on this International Women’s day and while I could easily list so many amazing and inspiring women I don’t think I will. 😤International women’s day is not about exceptional or inspiring women, it is about equality. Women should not have to be amazing or exceptional to be treated equally. Just as people with disabilities should not need to be brave or inspirational to have accessibility. People of colour, people who don’t fit in the binary systems we live in, people who are being oppressed for just being themselves, the list goes on. We don’t need to preform to deserve equality and freedom from oppression and discrimination. We deserve it because we exist. ⚖️It’s hard to find the balance between celebrating all the people (not just women but mostly women) who have advanced equality, the things that have been achieved AND remind ourselves that there is still a lot to do before we are truly equal and free. 🌏It’s also important to remember, even on a day putting the spotlight on women, that the systems of oppression do not just effect women, we need to stand in solidarity with everyone suffering from oppression. We are not truly equal until we are all equal. 🦾So instead of celebrating any particular individual I am asking all of you to think about one tiny thing that you could do today to create a world that is safe and fair for us all. Hot Topic: Equality and Feminism. ✨ I think some people misunderstand the meaning, and where it derives from. I wanted to give my point of view: Its having the freedom of choice. It’s not about making women the same as men or taking anything away from men. It’s about having the same opportunities and the right to decide how we live our lives. For centuries, women were controlled, We were ''owned'' by our fathers, then husbands, and even sons. We couldn’t vote, work, read books, or make basic decisions about our own lives. But that’s changed. In 2024, I choose how I live. I choose whether to marry, have children, pursue a career, or do something else entirely. The point is, it’s my choice. Some people get defensive or aggressive when they hear talk of equality or feminism, thinking it’s about demanding 50-50 or that women want to be treated exactly like men. That’s not what this is about. It’s about respect and the freedom to decide for ourselves. Equal pay for equal work, the right to live on our own terms, and the expectation of being treated with respect. 💕 If that makes you uncomfortable, maybe it’s time to ask yourself why?? Same rights and choices that men have always had. My Hustings Introduction - The Women’s Equality Party is the most innovative thing that has happened to UK politics in a generation, because it’s our mission to dismantle the current system and do things differently. Our country is a patriarchy. By which I mean that it is designed by and for a very small cohort of rich, white, straight, middle-aged, able-bodied men. Everyone else, young, or old, or a woman, or LGBT or others, come down the pecking order. Patriarchy says if you’re vulnerable, it’s your own fault and you should buck your ideas up. Feminism says if you’re vulnerable, it is the state’s job to ensure you get what you need to live a full life and contribute to society. Patriarchy says the world, its resources and people, are there to be exploited in order to make it richer. Feminism says that the world, its resources, and people, are part of a combined ecosystem that should be carefully looked after so that all of its parts can thrive. We seek to make this a reality in our country. That’s the Women’s Equality Party.

Its origins can be traced back to European and North American labor movements The first “Woman’s Day” celebration took place in Chicago on May 3, 1908. Organized by the U.S. Socialist Party, it brought together an audience of 1,500 women who demanded economic and political equality, on a day officially dedicated to “the female workers’ causes.” The following year, women gathered in New York for a similar celebration. Inspired by these American initiatives, European socialists soon followed suit. that emerged around the turn of the 20th century. Over time different dates emerged, but more countries embraced the day. And now finally, March 8 celebrations typically involved not only feminists, but a broad assortment of activists, women’s groups and labor organizations, calling for such issues as equal pay, political parity, reproductive rights and child care.
