With apologies to Charmaigne Gallemit who published an "abridged" tale of the progress of programming languages, and thereby made it more readable, I did want to add a few thoughts from someone who was an participant in early high school computer science classes.
My first addition would be to lead off with COBOL, not Fortran, if only for the reason that some of us, even in 2024, still are dealing with live COBOL based systems. It's the cockroach of languages if only because it's cheaper to keep COBOL programmers on life support than it is to replace the system.
Second, I think you have to include Pascal given how it introduced a "new" programing syntax that can be argued was the basis for many of the modern languages today. If you learned how to code in Pascal you can muddle through a significant number of the programming languages used today.
Finally, we are all abstracted from it today, but there is nothing quite like programming in 8-bit machine language to make you very very appreciative that we can use these modern languages and let the compiler deal with the translation. The hanging chads of the 2000 election came decades after programmers had to deal with them to program a computer.

The author focuses on code that will be directly "consumed" by other programmers, like APIs, libraries, etc. But one could argue that this principle is equaly important for any piece of software. Someone will have to maintain and update the code in the future... (either another dev, or even your future self). So writting human-understandable code is key.
