Funny though this is, this is a huge and increasing problem for most Marketing Managers I speak to daily. They have too much to juggle, are expected to do more than ever (and be experts in all these areas) and take care of more when the next silver bullet comes in. For all the talk of how AI is/isn't taking away marketers' jobs, like managing humans, you still need to give AI clear instructions and specific objectives. This is usually a top-down problem. I see many boards, owners, directors, bosses or whatever putting pressure on marketers to do more than they are capable of, let alone have an understanding of. Marketers are expected to be the goalie, defence, midfield, striker, coach, analyst, physio and ticket sales. It's failing all over the place, and it's due to margin squeeze and a misunderstanding of what marketing is and what is really working. It's not just top though. Marketers (myself included) get distracted with trying things that don't matter. Like politics, you can't please everyone all the time, in marketing you can't be great at all channels at once. So how do you cope? Pick the 1-3 things that truly make an impact. Push back on pointless metrics. Tell your boss to stop Googling the company, that's not how it works. Basics. · Track properly. · Know your target customer. · Use that targeting to inform your campaigns. · Double down on what works. · Accept you can't / don't need to be on every platform. · Use specialists to deliver true ROI (hold them accountable) · Set realistic expectations. · Don't sit on the fence. If you know something is right say so. · The next shiny new thing won't solve your ROAS problem, get the timeless basics right. What do you think?
