Rwandan President #PaulKagame is on course to secure his fourth presidential term, with provisional election results indicating an overwhelming victory. Kagame has garnered 99.15% of the vote, effectively extending his 24-year tenure by an additional five years. This victory follows a decision by Rwandan courts and the national electoral body to disqualify two of his most vocal opponents from the race. Kagame is widely recognised for his role in leading the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) to victory over extremist factions, thereby ending the 1994 genocide that claimed over 800 000 lives in just 100 days. His leadership has been instrumental in Rwanda's post-genocide economic resurgence. However, Kagame's administration has been frequently criticised for #humanrights abuses and the suppression of political opposition and free speech. His re-election also comes against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo #DRC. United Nations reports have implicated Rwandan soldiers in combat alongside #M23rebels in eastern DRC, allegations which #Kigali has consistently denied. The final election results are anticipated on 27 July | SOURCE: Africa Practice

🇺🇳🇪🇹🇸🇴🌍 UN Security Council redirects Somaliland dispute to IGAD, AU The UN Security Council recommends that Ethiopia and Somalia resolve their differences through IGAD and the AU, disclosed spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He told the press Ethiopia has requested IGAD to call for another summit for dialogue on last month’s sea-access deal that has infuriated Mogadishu. IGAD had not issued an official response. The UNSC convened a meeting under its ‘Peace and Security in Africa’ agenda item on January 29 at Somalia’s request. However, the Council did not disclose details of the proceedings to the media. Following the UNSC’s redirection to regional platforms such as the AU and IGAD, the Ethiopian government placed a request for an IGAD session to discuss the issues. Ethiopia did not attend an IGAD extraordinary session held in Uganda two weeks ago, despite the Ethiopia-Somaliland MoU being one of two main topics on the agenda. #UN #Ethiopia #Somalia #IGAD #AU

Ethiopia faces a complex and divisive political landscape, with ongoing armed conflict and a lack of consensus on how to reform the country’s constitution. READ - https://lnkd.in/d9BnkT6e Some argue that Ethiopia's problems stem from a lack of democracy and a violation of human rights, leading to widespread unrest. Others contend that the ethnically-based federal system enshrined in the constitution itself is the source of the country's turmoil, creating a divide between ethnic groups and fostering secessionist sentiments. While the government has proposed constitutional amendments, the process is fraught with challenges, as political actors remain deeply divided and there is a lack of trust between the government and armed opposition groups. #ethiopia #ethiopian #africa

a speech worth hearing...
The pernicious and deeply flawed Rwanda Bill You know when a piece of legislation goes way beyond the normal tribal politics of the day when a respected Conservative grandee, such as Lord Ken Clarke, makes the kind of speech that will be remembered for many years, and made me and others feel honoured to be in his ranks. Clarke’s excoriating attack against his own beloved party and Government also gives great hope that our democracy and our values for decency will be passionately defended. He and others argued that just because this Gov decrees Rwanda to be safe doesn’t mean that it necessarily is . Unless, that is we’re in the realms of Orwell’s 1984 and the Ministry for Truth. After the debat I felt great pride to join Lord Clarke and many other senior Conservatives who voted against the Rwanda Bill that shames our country. The Gov lost 5 votes during this debate. Please watch, listen, and repost on every social media platform to help protect our democratic values.

In Progress… We’ve started today’s session with a panel discussion titled, "Spotlight on Togo: Safeguarding Against Power Consolidation and Promoting Peaceful Transitions of Power in Africa." This plenary aims to address the critical issues of democratic governance and political stability in Africa. Togo has recently become a focal point for concerns about power consolidation due to significant constitutional changes made by the ruling Union for the Republic (UNIR) party. These changes include the elimination of citizens' direct right to vote for the president and the establishment the President of the Council of Ministers, elected by the National Assembly, entrenching the ruling party's dominance and extends the current president's tenure, bypassing the previous term limits established to prevent long-term rule. We are excited to have: ✅Hon. Kokou Dodji Apevon, National President, Forces Démocratiques Pour La République (FDR) - Togo; ✅Dr. Stefanie Brinkel, Director, Regional Programme Political Dialogue, West Africa; ✅Amb Bamba Youssoufou, Executive Secretary, Foreign Relations, PDCI-RDA - Ivory Coast and ✅Hon. Fana Norman Mkhonza, Deputy Secretary General, African Christian Democratic Party - South Africa contribute to this discussion. #2024DUAConference #KASPolDiSSA

We have frequently praised #Tanzania's President Samia Hassan since she came to power for her tact, governance, progressive policies, and international outlook. She has been just the tonic that Tanzania needed after Magafuli's rule. Presidential elections are due to be held in late 2025, and we hope that Hassan receives her first electoral mandate then - recall that she came into the Presidential role after having been Magafuli's VP and his passing in 2021. However, two factors concern us at this point. First, back in Q4 of 2023 a review and potential change of the constitution was delayed until 2027. This means that the 2025 election will proceed under the existing constitution. If Hassan loses then her successor could then choose to repeal the progressive and significant reforms that she has implemented, dragging Tanzania backward once again. It also means that, should Hassan lose, she will be unable to legally challenge the results once the commission declares them. Second, political maneuvering is once again under way inside the CCM (Hassan's party, and the dominant political force in Tanzania). This has long been a feature of the CCM, but when Hassan first came to power she was artful and diplomatic in managing it, managing the expectations of Magafuli-loyalists and reformists alike. This time around she has been a little more authoritarian in her management, and that may come back to bite her at election time. #Frontier #Emerging #Investing #Intelligence #Geopolitics
