"Instead, restorative urbanism should be thought of as a concept about rebuilding community bonds through the ideas of urbanism. In essence that is what New Urbanism is about: building people-focused places that enhance community (among many other things). Restorative urbanism is complex, nuanced, and collaborative"
A look back to look forward in Cincinnati's best-known urban neighborhood. The story of Over-the-Rhine can help inspire new urbanists to look at the complex issues facing neighborhood evolution with fresh eyes. Learn more as part of #CNU32 on May 15-18.

Our cities are built of neighborhoods. And our neighborhoods were built with a hundred little things (benches, bike lanes, parks, sidewalks, light posts, flower gardens, cafes, street vendors, etc.). What would happen if we took our dreams to rebuild a better neighborhood and combined it with our ability to do little things? Maybe we could build a better block. Here are my thoughts on building a better block based on what started in Oak Cliff, Texas (near Dallas) and spread from Portland to Detroit and Melbourne to Tahran. https://lnkd.in/gi8HVnmd *What are your dreams for rebuilding a better block in your city?

Have you heard about Culdesac Tempe? It’s a car-free rental apartment community in Tempe, AZ with 700+ homes, local businesses, shared courtyards, and common amenities. While it’s being positioned as the first of its kind in the US, I’m confident it won’t be the last. Like the European cluster apartment concept I shared a few weeks ago, Culdesac Tempe won’t appeal to everyone and has its fair share of critics. Some of that, at least, is because it represents a shift from the cultural norm—exactly why I think it’s interesting and a much-needed alternative in the future, which is going to be anything but normal. But as Scott Higgins and I always say, to get to something different, you need a different process, one that’s high on collaboration and experimentation. Culdesac Tempe proves our point. According to architect Dan Parolek who worked on the project, “one of the critical ingredients in Culdesac’s success has been its coordination with the Tempe planning department, which was willing to bend rules and requirements to accommodate the unusual project.” While the jury is still out on the long-term success of the project, we’re always excited to see people willing to try something new. Policy development and consulting around governance structures to support safe and effective integration of innovation with considerations around future ready infrastructure
Excited to be back in Buffalo today to present at the ITE New York Upstate Section Annual Meeting on the Buffalo Smart Streets Design Plan. This journey started in February 2020 with a future of #mobility focused charrette in partnership with the City of Buffalo and Congress for New Urbanism that looked at how to support next generation communities with a focus on land use, #policy, and technology. And, how to make sure cold weather environments can support #technology integration. In addition to many other actions taken by the City since 2020, one of them was developing an approach to right-size innovation with City goals and investing in future ready infrastructure to support the integration of technology City-wide. This project developed a 20% design that looked beyond just physical infrastructure, and also developed a methodology for how to address modernizing governance and organizational structures. The final approach and recommendations seek to position the City to proactively plan for and take advantage of the new #infrastructure synergies (i.e. energy and transportation) we are seeing in #transportation, and support more equitable and accessible mobility that works for Buffalo, and all those who live and work in this great City that I have really come to appreciate and enjoy. How do you create a unified master plan design navigating various property interests?🤔 At the heart of Orange County lies the Civic Center in Santa Ana, surrounded by a rich and diverse history. However, the Civic Center itself, with its mix of city, county, state, and federal properties, presents a unique challenge due to complex ownership arrangements. TCA was tasked with delineating a vision to leverage underutilized land and create a harmonized concept for the center of the Civic Center, resulting in a concept centered around a centralized plaza/park, serving as a focal point for all Civic Center uses. 🌳 🚴♀️ 🗺️ #masterplanning #design #concept
