This has led businesses to diversify their manufacturing facilities, with Nvidia's CEO suggesting that Malaysia could become a regional hub for AI manufacturing. 👥According to Tech in Asia, most of the firms operating in Southeast Asia work in verticals that support AI chip production, with only six of 37 actually manufacturing chips. Singapore is a particularly attractive location for these businesses, accounting for approximately 11% of the world's semiconductor market share.

Experts Urge U.S. to Boost Domestic Semiconductor Production to Strengthen AI Capabilities Industry experts are emphasizing the importance of onshoring semiconductor production to maintain the United States’ competitive edge in artificial intelligence (AI) development. Jonathan Klamkin, CEO of semiconductor firm Aeluma, highlighted in an interview the integral role of manufacturing in fostering innovation across the supply chain. Klamkin explained that innovation is not just about designing software and chips; it involves the entire production process. “When you innovate across the supply chain, you innovate the manufacturing equipment, how to operate the facilities, and the design of the chips themselves,” Klamkin stated. A US start-up Tenstorrent Inc is partnering with a government-backed research group in Japan to design advanced artificial intelligence chips, aiming to provide an alternative option to industry leaders Nvidia Corp and Arm Holdings PLC. The Japanese government is funding a range of projects in the semiconductor industry, with the goal of producing jointly designed AI chips at the government-backed start-up Rapidus Corp. In an effort to decrease power consumption, Tenstorrent is working to launch AI accelerators at the fastest time-to-market rate, aiming to begin chip production in 2027. A look at semiconductor production by geography between 1990-2030. Fascinating to see how policy decisions by the U.S., Japan, and Europe saw these three regions shed ~70% of the market to China, Taiwan, and Korea, which had nearly 0 market share as of 1990. When it comes to leading edge, it is more like 100% of the market that has been offshored. And this certainly comes with a significant risk profile. The good news is the recent chips act passages around the world will bring at least a small percentage (probably more than 10 and less than 20 percent of the advanced chipmaking and packaging back) With the rapid growth of AI, more capacity for logic, memory, packaging, etc... is only going to become more important.
