The Women In Tech Coterie is launching this week at Amardis in Bristol, and if you haven't heard about it then here's why you should have... - Only 29% of UK Tech sector identifies as female (Technation survey) - 3000 women left the industry in the first HALF of 2023 (ONS) - In fact, 50% of women leave the tech industry by the age of 35 (Techopedia)... - ... and 32% of women in tech report being the only female in the room at work (Techopedia) What you can see is underrepresentation and a high exit rate where you'd expect to be stepping up into leadership positions. The Women in Tech Coterie has been set up to address these challenges to provide a tangible boost to female careers in tech: - Partnership, mentorship and community are key to the network, offering support and guidance to building a career as a woman in tech - Two accelerator programs will run: one to boost performance and growth in an early tech career; and another to support those aiming at C-suite to achieve their goals I'm really excited to learn how this will all come together, and I'm certain that it will be a resource that my contacts will hear a lot about! ❓ How can we bring more women into tech? That was the main theme of a panel discussion I had the privilege and pleasure of participating in at #CODECON, a few days ago, together with Veronika Pizano, COO of Aj ty v IT. We explored a ton of issues within this complex and multifaceted topic, trying to answer pressing questions like: ✅ How can we improve the current state of women in tech? ✅ How do we break harmful and persistent stereotypes? ✅ Why and when do young girls lose interest in IT, and what does this gap signify? ✅ How do we empower retrained women? From my position at #DellTechnologies, I explained what we do—our initiatives and practical solutions for attracting new female professionals, retaining them, reskilling, training, mentoring, and empowering them at every stage of their career. Through programs like #STEMAspire, we strive to maintain a steady flow of eager, young talent and ensure the transition from academic to corporate is seamless. To me, the message is quite clear—let's continue to champion these initiatives, create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in tech and let's support organizations like AjTyvIT , they deserve it for their work and contribution to society! It's disheartening to hear about the closure of Women Who Code. This organization has connected technologists and provided an unwavering source of support to women in the tech industry since 2011. The network of mentors, advocates, and career connections this community provided has been a true gift to my career. This news serves as an important reminder of the urgent need for greater action and support from both corporations and society to empower women in tech. Creating inclusive spaces where women are not only encouraged but given equal opportunities to succeed is important now more than ever. Data Science already determines so much in our individual lives and societies, we must shape it in a way where it truly benefits us all. We need more data scientists and we need them to be representative across all dimensions (not just genders). How? Well, let's start by not acting like programming is natural talent you are either born with or cannot obtain. Python is just a language with vocabulary and grammar and yes, you need some problem-solving skills - but in what world do you not? Let's stop saying "I just can't do math" as if it is something you can't learn to a pretty useful level, if you just put in the effort. Let's not treat data science as this alien thing you need to be called for by the universe but understand it is just one way of approaching problems. Of course, not everyone will be interested in or maybe even able to do data science but in my experience as a data scientist, university teacher and mentor - there are definitely too many people who have never considered it, simply because of psychological barriers that should not be there.
