Calyxia, a French clean #technology business, is on track to become profitable. The company recently raised a $35 million Series B financing to enable it scale up industrial manufacturing of its sustainable alternatives to #microparticles and microcapsules, putting it on track to achieve net profitability by 2026. But co-founder and CEO Jamie Walters thinks the B Corp is only getting started. The "starter" problem Calyxia is addressing is astounding on a worldwide scale: Microplastics are poisoning everything on the planet, from soils, rivers, and beaches to the cold waters of the Arctic — and they're even seeping into our own bodies and minds. Aside from that, the traditional production methods used by the materials and chemical sectors might result in a variety of environmental difficulties. It is critical to green industrial #production processes if we are to protect the environment for future generations and minimise the energy required to produce goods. Walters stated that Calyxia's goal for the next five to ten years is to become the #globalleader in the microparticles and microcapsules categories. Following that, he hopes the company's technologies will have a broader impact on the industrial #chemicalbusiness. The company was founded in 2015 as a result of academic research between Harvard and ESPCI-Paris PSL, and Walters was a member of the scientific founding team after spending time at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, where he earned his PhD in #biotechnology and chemical engineering and worked as a researcher. "At first, I was in a lab with a team of #scientists, researching and discovering the limitations of this technology, and dreaming about where it may take us. The Cleantech Innovation Award recognizes innovation at any stage of development in business and academia that can mitigate effects to, protect, or enhance the environment. Starting in 2021 with the recognition that there is a significant amount of waste generated from single use plastic items in scientific laboratories, our 2024 winner is pioneering a technology that will result in a transition from petro-plastic to bio-plastic. Utilizing their expertise in biochemistry and process engineering they have invented a material derived from seaweed, along with engaging with rural communities to investigate economic development in seaweed farming in the province. Choosing seaweed as a material has far reaching climate implications. Seaweed is a powerful carbon sink, absorbing more CO2 than trees. Time to put an alumnus in the picture! 📸     Meet Philippe Bijnens, the founder of Heau bv, a start-up with an ingenious solution to prevent water waste when showering. Heau is one of the start-ups to graduate from last year's accelerator programme.      Before getting under the shower, many people leave the water running for a while, until it's warmed up. Heau's solution prevents all this water from going to waste by capturing warm water for your previous shower. This way, the next time you shower, you have immediate hot water, without having to wait, and without wasting water! 💧     Let's think for a minute about how impactful this solution is. Not just when implemented in individual households but especially on a larger scale in sectors such as the healthcare industry. 🌍     But here's the catch: it's not easy for start-ups to gain footing in new industries. That's where the Circular kickstart comes in. I had the chance to pitch in the final round of the Valorsul Open Innovation program. 63 Applicants were whittled down to 9 finalists, and on the day 3 winners were chosen. Representing Greyparrot, I demonstrated how the capture of #MaterialCharacterisationData in a sorting facility can: 🫰 Reduce costs: through #DecreasingDowntime & continuous #PurityMonitoring 💸 Increase revenue: through #OptimisingThroughput and leveraging #ProductYield as a KPI 🏭 Improve efficiency: through tracking #CapacityUtilisation as a KPI This was deemed worthy to win the category for Next-Gen Waste Packaging Sorting. Innovate for a Greener, Smarter Future! 🌱 🚀 Two weeks in July, I participated in the Global Challenge Lab 2024, an entrepreneurial virtual program organized by Futurize in cooperation with Imperial Enterprise Lab, Tsinghua University x-lab and Technische Universität München. 🏆 Together with my team Tetyana Shafranovych and Avik Gupta, I worked on an idea to integrate climate resilience into the cities of tomorrow. With our idea LIMU we ranked amongst the top 6 out of 111 teams. 💡 What is LIMU? LIMU means algae in Hawaiian, and it has incredible super powers. Algae are much more efficient at capturing CO2 than trees. LIMU is a panel filled with algae and water that enables carbon capture. It can be installed almost anywhere - lower walls, facades or roofs of commercial buildings. 🏙️ The panels also provide insulation, which can save energy costs. 💨 Algae in the panels can be harvested around once a month and used by other industries. For example, algae can be used as biofuel, supplements (contains many important nutrients), cattle food (cows produce 40% less methane when eating algae) or cosmetics. 🪸 Additionally, the green color of the algae panels has a positive effect on wellbeing. With LIMU, we leverage the ocean‘s powerhouse for a more sustainable future. 🌱 💬 What do you think about our idea?
