Shipyards and suppliers have increasing workforce requirements, particularly due to international peer competition. During World War 2, there was a bridge at Remagen in Germany called Ludendorff Bridge that created so much stories about the determination of German and US soldiers. The Wehrmacht considered the bridge so strategic that it didn't want it blown up even though the US Army was closing in the heartland of Germany. Hitler with his delusional mind still believed Germany be able to repulse the Americans and would use the bridge for counter attack. The bridge had been bombed numerous times by the USAAF in an attempt to destroy it, to avoid the Germans from suppling or escaping through the only remaining bridge in area. When Hitler finally realized the bridge could not be defended anymore, He wanted it blown up. And they did. But to the amazement of the German engineers, the bridge was still standing. It did collapse a few days later after US forces crossed with massive armor and transports for the final conquest of Germany.. You can find numerous barracks in different bases in Germany built by the Nazis. They are still operational with no cracks. But buildings built by the allies during occupation already have been losing their structural integrity, with numerous cracks and some are even demolished for reconstruction. And right in the US, we have bridges that collapsed when harmonics happened, or immediately collapsed when impacted by heavy force. What's happening to our Quality Control? Paperwork is done more to satisfy the inspectors without actually going to the composition. Furthermore, as it has been happening, the inspectors don't have the necessary background or qualifications doing the inspections. If investigations are conducted, and qualifications of the inspectors are questioned, the results will be very shocking. What happened to that bridge is just one of the many that are poorly designed and constructed. It is a must that all bridges, tunnels and other public structures, including federal buildings undergo inspections. We can't wait for similar catastrophe to happen before we act on them.

Beware Fishy Machinations The Malaysian defence minister proposes to revive national service for our youths. In short, the proposal is for 20,000 youths to go to train at army camps for 45 days. Cost: RM100 million. Question 1: What is the objective? Question 2: Would covering only 4% of an annual cohort of Malaysian youths achieve anything? Maybe the defence minister can first resolve some long outstanding littoral combat ship deliveries before wasting precious resources on yet another impulsive whim that affects 20,000 young lives? #nationalservice #defence #ministerialwhims
