Canada is a #criticalminerals wonderland - but we are finding it costlier and tougher to get these minerals out of the ground. As money goes into mines and minerals processing around the world, how can we make sure it comes here to create #goodpayingjobs for Canadians? Can Canada position itself as the global supplier of choice when it comes to #nickel #copper #cobalt #lithium #graphite and #rareearthelements so our allies and trading partners can know these materials will be available, when they need them? How can we all share in the prosperity? #WhatInspiresMe - #Future #Mine #BritishColumbia #Canada one of the significant advantages of opening a mine in British Columbia (#BC), is the abundance of #natural #resources and a supportive #business #environment. Read the full study here: https://lnkd.in/gg2DB9k8 BC is known for its rich deposits of #minerals, including #copper, #gold, and other valuable resources. Here are some key benefits: Resource #Wealth: BC is home to a diverse range of #mineral resources, making it a prime location for #mining operations. Access to these resources can be a substantial advantage for mining companies. Skilled #Workforce: BC boasts a well-educated and skilled workforce, including professionals experienced in the mining #industry. Access to this #labour pool can enhance the efficiency of mining operations. #Infrastructure: The province has a well-developed infrastructure, including #roads, #ports, and utilities, which facilitates the transportation of goods and #equipment. Proximity to #Asian #Markets: BC's location on the #Pacific coast provides easy access to #Asian markets, which can be advantageous for exporting minerals, especially to countries with high demand for resources. MABC has released an independent economic impact study that confirms critical minerals offer British Columbians a generational opportunity. The study reviewed 16 proposed critical mineral mines (14 new mines and two mine extensions) in advanced stages of development in BC. Together, the development and construction of the 16 mines represent: · A $36 billion near-term capital investment · 300,000 person-years of employment; and · $11 billion in tax revenues. Regarding long-term economic benefits, the study estimates the economic impact of these mines could reach an impressive $800 billion over several decades. BC lags other competing jurisdictions like Ontario and Quebec who are taking bold policy actions to attract investment in their critical mineral sectors. To realize this generational opportunity, BC must have competitive policies that will attract the investment necessary to grow and sustain the sector. One example is the BC government’s transition to an Output-Based Pricing System (BC OBPS). BC’s mining and smelting industry supports a carbon price signal, but we currently pay the highest carbon tax in Canada and the world, while having the lowest emissions globally. It’s imperative that critical mineral mines in BC pay a carbon tax that’s competitive with Ontario’s and Quebec’s, while maintaining BC’s position as a climate leader. If not, the OBPS will negatively impact investment decisions and undermine BC’s critical minerals potential. #CDHAlert | In today's alert, Vivien Chaplin talks about the accelerated transformation and collaboration in South Africa’s transport sector to target ambitious economic growth: New regulations and reforms on the horizon. The appointment of the 7th administration comes with a renewed drive to address the challenges faced by the transport sector. This was highlighted again during the 2024 Joburg Mining Indaba, currently underway at the Inanda Club in Sandton. The ongoing collaboration between the private sector and government to address South Africa's logistics challenges was highlighted at the launch of Phase 2 of the Government Business Partnership on 1 October 2024 and discussions with the Transnet CEO at the Johannesburg Mining Indaba on 2 October 2024. A key aspect of the Government’s strategy to achieve this is the Economic Regulation of Transport Act 6 of 2024 (ERTA) (assented to by the President on 6 June 2024, with a commencement date yet to be set). ERTA could serve as a powerful turning point for South Africa, paving the way for greater regulatory oversight, efficiency, and transparency within the industry. Thanks to #economic turbulence and #geopolitics, #China is buying up #gold like never before — and it’s looking to places like Papua New Guinea to supply it. But with aggressive tactics and irresponsible #mining practices, China’s ‘gold rush’ #diplomacy is alarming locals and sparking concern in the West. Sean Williams reports. On a quiet, green bend of the Frieda River, in the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea, sits 16 hectares of land that may become one of the largest open-pit mines on earth. The Frieda River Project — operated by Australian miner PanAust, which itself is wholly owned by Chinese state-owned vehicle Guangdong Rising Assets Management — is forecast to yield #gold, #silver and #copper worth around $1.5 billion per year for 33 years. Yet, today there are no pits or blacktop roads at Frieda, and its small knot of cabins and machinery are enveloped on all sides by rainforest so extensive it has been called a “second Amazon.” Thousands of local community members want to keep it that way. Since 2020 local activists have launched a campaign called “Save The Sepik” — referring to the river from which the Frieda flows — and have accused the mine of various #environmental and economic injustices. They say PanAust does not have a robust plan to deal with the mine’s estimated 1.5 billion tons of waste, or “tailings,” and they highlight the fact that China-backed pits nearby have rendered swaths of the country uninhabitable. “We’re not going to feed the Chinese company and its greed and selfishness,” says Emmanuel ‘Manu’ Peni, the “Save The Sepik” group’s leader, adding that around a hundred thousand people have backed the campaign. Powerbrokers in the capital city of Port Moresby, some 500 miles away, however, feel differently. Gold is Papua New Guinea’s second-largest #export behind #petroleum, and mines like Frieda are crucial if the country’s prime minister, James Marape, is to deliver on his promise to double Papua New Guinea’s GDP by 2029. Moreover, those in the capital are feeling the full weight of China’s gold rush diplomacy. In recent years, as China’s demand for gold has skyrocketed, Chinese companies have invested billions of dollars in Papua New Guinea gold mines, and Chinese firms have offered to deliver much-needed #infrastructure. Papua New Guinea is not the only Pacific nation from which China can realize its golden ambitions. But scattered across the sprawling island nation of some nine million people are the clearest examples of what has — and could — go very, very wrong. For the full piece, click the link below:
