Exciting News from Global Standard! 🌿    We're thrilled to announce that Global Standard is in the developmental stages of creating a groundbreaking new standard to extend GOTS benefits to a wider range of sustainable fibres.    This new initiative will build on GOTS' 20-year legacy of setting high environmental, social and ethical criteria, empowering the industry to adopt sustainable practices along the entire textile value chain.     Our new standard will leverage the powerful tools already established by Global Standard for GOTS, including the Global Fibre Registry and Global Trace-Base. In addition, the standard will assist companies in demonstrating their adherence to supply chain regulations and beyond.     Once our committees agree on the first draft, the standard will enter a public consultation procedure as per ISEAL requirements. Circularity Manager Barbara Krauß was invited by our cooperation partner VskE (Verband der Hersteller selbstklebender Etiketten und Schmalbahnkonverter e.V.) to talk about recyclability of packaging. VskE tackles important issues that affect all companies in the labelling market. Had such a wonderful time at the Innovation Forum Sustainable Packaging conference earlier this week! It was great learning from professionals in the industry and hearing what brands, suppliers, and regulators are talking about. The conference was held under Chatham House Rules, which led to more candid conversation. Some key takeaways: ❓ Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations are causing a lot of questions across sectors: How are the categories being vetted? Will brands take all responsibility? What will happen with the funds once they are collected? Will we see an increase in lacking recycling and composting infrastructure? Can states harmonize requirements? 🤝 We need collaboration across sectors and transparency in sustainability goals and label claims. 📝 There was widespread agreement that regulation is lacking in the US, which puts pressure on brands and consumers to drive sustainability. This lack of legislation leads to disjointed efforts and those on the forefront taking risks while competitors continue with status quo. ♻ Plastics and recycling made up the bulk of the conversation, which felt like a miss in terms of pushing the envelope with sustainable packaging. There is a lot of hope for a meaningful global resolution with The Plastics Treaty. We know that it's important to reduce virgin material and increase recycling, however looking at alternatives such as paper, bio based solutions (seaweed, mycelium, etc), and circular/reuse options will be critical long term. Excited to join the conversation again at their Scope 3 conference in December!

Smithers' SustPack US 2024 is now over and I've been digesting the content from this dense and useful event.  Brittany Onslow and her team did a great job recruiting speakers to enumerate many of the challenges in this space and we were delighted to offer some of the solutions.  Unsurprisingly, Emerald Technology Ventures takes the position that open innovation can provide cost-effective and rapid solutions to fill technology gaps resolving materials issues, consumer behaviour (for example recycling vs wish-cycling, or packaging reuse dynamics) and regulatory requirements.   While many subjects were ably discussed, the dominant theme seemed to be the evolving regulatory framework for packaging. On regulatory issues, 2023 was clearly a year of considerable apprehension and frustration for packaging-facing players as there are major changes to the rules in the works - with different requirements depending on geography and clarity is hard to find: * The PPWR in Europe is moving towards adoption and there are significant recent developments in the proposed language (adding reuse, PFAS, free-volume, in addition to recycling targets etc). Shout-out to to Emily Wynne and Mariya Absar, PhD from Quantis who delivered a comprehensive summary of this beast! * In parallel, EPR (extended producer responsibility) in the US was the subject of several presentations, SB343 and SB1201 legislation in California will make it virtually impossible to sell anything in a non-recyclable package and labelling requirements are very tightly defined. There were several excellent speakers on this topic; I especially enjoyed Michelle Carvell's contribution. * Globally, the International Plastics Treaty is also moving forward (slowly). There are 5 scheduled major negotiation events, the fourth of which will happen this April and the last will happen in the fall. Conflicting national interests make this a challenging topic, and Liz Nichols of the US State Department described some of the maneuvering that will (hopefully) result in in a meaningful agreement on how to responsibly steward the 450MT of plastics we produce each year. As she put it, getting to a common global understanding when some countries are ecologically sensitive with circular economy strategies in place and others can’t even count the number of open-pit garbage fires that are currently burning is a Herculean task, but even a small step in the right direction would be a success.  If you are a startup executive with a sustainable packaging solution or a global corporate actor with a sustainable packaging gap (or anything in between...), Fredric Petit or I (Neil Cameron) would be delighted to hear from you! On October 9, the Packaging Valley Germany e. V. Sustainability Day 2024 will take place. This event is an important forum for the packaging machinery industry, providing a platform for insights, dialog, and discussions on sustainability within the sector.   Attendees can look forward to the presentation, “Sustainable Packaging Materials: An Overview of the PPWR and Its Impacts – Requirements for Machinery Manufacturing,” by Holger Hoss, Head of Strategic Product Management at SÜDPACK.   💡 The PPWR is a systematic implementation of the EU Plastics Directive, aimed at reducing resource consumption and driving the packaging industry’s transition from a linear to a circular economy. Flexible packaging is already leading the way in terms of material reduction. When developing sustainable packaging solutions, it is essential to consider not only recyclability but also the environmental impact. To ensure process reliability, close collaboration with the packaging machinery industry is crucial when developing new solutions.   Holger Hoss will provide an overview of the PPWR, its goals, and timeline. He will also explain how the PPWR is factored into the development of flexible packaging solutions. GALIA IS COMMITTED TO THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY OF PACKAGING Household, Commercial, and Industrial packaging are the subject of a new attention, which results from the advent of many new environmental regulations. The automotive industry has always been at the forefront, for example with a massive use of reused packaging. However, we see that there is a need to shift gears, because of new legislations and the targets that will have to be achieved, for example in terms of the effective recycling of packaging waste… The GALIA Circular Economy of Packaging workgroup is therefore studying the environmental challenges of the packaging we use in the automotive sector. This will result in formal approaches and accountability throughout their complete lifecycle, and technical mastery of their design, starting with the materials used to manufacture them, to the actual effectiveness of collecting, segregating, and treating the waste generated at the end of life. As such, we have drafted a first GALIA recommendation “PACKAGING MATERIAL RECOMMENDATIONS, Towards a Full Circular Economy” (https://bit.ly/emb20), which offers an illustrated catalogue of best or not-so-good practices regarding the impact of materials used in packaging solutions. This document will evolve regularly, because will make progress on best practices or because the recycling sectors will continue to improve: we invite users of this document to provide us with their comments for future versions. Finally, GALIA and its members wanted to show their commitment to the environment by offering this recommendation free of charge to non-GALIA members, thus allowing a wider dissemination of good practices. #circulareconomy #packaging #automotiveindustry
