From a Technovation Participant to a Chapter Ambassador for western Uganda!🚀🚀 And that's not even the crazy part 😍 NIMARUNGI the company I found is the program implementor!🎊 How cool is it that an idea that was birthed through skills learnt from Technovation gets to be the same solution inspiring more young girls to build for good! Friends, I'm super super excited!🎉🎊 Back in 2016, I was a Technovation participant, brimming with curiosity and a desire to use technology to solve real-world problems. A little girl with so many questions and ideas. For the last 9 years through different Volunteer roles at I've been able to closely and directly work with 600+ young girls across different parts of Uganda and Beyond; Recruiting, Inspiring and Motivating them to be the answers to the global issues that we have from a localized context. So understand me if I say I'm excited, because now is the time to move the numbers from Hundreds to Thousands with the support of each one of you reading this now. I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of Technovation. It's not just about coding; it's about empowering young girls to believe in themselves, embrace their creativity, and become leaders in STEM. I've complained several times about education inequality and pushing this program to Western Uganda to school going girls and non school going girls is our way of saying every girl needs a chance to realize their potential regardless of who they are and where they come from. So Yes! Because of this I'm thrilled to be the very first chapter for Western Uganda and to set it up for the coming generation. in empowering the next generation of tech innovators. Aspiring young female coders, developers, and tech enthusiasts from across South Africa and various African countries put their skills to the test at the 10th annual GirlCode Hackathon, which took place from 31 August to 1 September 2024, at the MTN Group Headquarters. Zandile Mkwanazi, Founder and CEO of GirlCode, reflects on the non-profit's 10-year milestone, celebrating the success of making the hackathon accessible to girls across 10 countries in Africa. "It's crazy to think that something that was born from such humble beginnings back in 2014 has come this far, and that talented young women from all over Africa now have their chance to learn, grow and show their talent in coding through the hackathon," says Mkwanazi. Bongie Tlhakanye, Head of Department for Service Management at Vuma (a longstanding supporter of GirlCode since its inception), says that while she does see more women entering tech spaces, the numbers are simply not enough. "Initiatives like GirlCode are fantastic and so important when it comes to bridging the gender gap in tech and encouraging more women into fields like telecommunications," says Tlhakanye. "GirlCode reaching 10 years of doing the incredible work they do is a huge milestone. Over the past decade, they have consistently empowered young South African women with coding skills and opportunities in the tech sector. The fact that this year's event has been opened up to more young women across the continent underscores their commitment to expanding access and inclusivity, enabling even more young women to break barriers and thrive in this industry." Safe Online Spaces Create safe and supportive online communities where girls can learn, share ideas, and collaborate. Platforms that offer a secure environment can boost their confidence and encourage active participation. 5. Role Models and Mentors Highlight successful women in tech as role models. Mentorship programs connecting girls with women leaders in technology can provide guidance, inspiration, and real-world insights. 6. Entrepreneurship Support Support female tech entrepreneurs with resources, funding, and mentorship. Innovation hubs and startup incubators can nurture their ideas and help turn them into successful ventures. By investing in these areas, we can unlock the potential of our young girls, ensuring they are not just consumers of technology, but also creators and innovators. While #skilldevelopment is critical, it is not sufficient. When I was a confused 18 year old interested in technology, I remember watching a lot of YouTube videos, trying to learn tech skills because I just wanted to pursue my interest(s). Well, while that was and still important, I couldn't have navigated my way through if I had not gotten supportive communities and mentors who guided me. I had thought I needed to break every code before I could have tech skills, however I got to realize through these mentorship opportunities that tech wasn't and isn't all about "coding." My point is that, getting young girls excited about tech as early as possible is the only way we will bridge the gender gap in tech, and this can come in many creative ways like mentorship. For generations, mentorship, in various forms, has been a crucial factor in fostering professional growth. Mentorship can play a vital role in piquing and nurturing young girls' interest in STEM fields from an early age. This rings especially true for me as a young woman who have seen immense benefits from receiving guidance and advice through this form of relationship building - mentorship. Having women in tech as mentors offers tangible role models for females entering the field. Seeing someone who looks like you succeeding can inspire and reassure girls and young women that they too belong in tech. This visibility not only empowers but also normalizes women's participation in technology sectors, gradually narrowing the gender gap. In response to the gender gap in the tech industry, PAAHIBU SPACE is happy to introduce the TechsiStars Mentorship Bootcamp. This initiative aims to empower and support aspiring girls and young women across Africa who are keen on pursuing careers in technology and entrepreneurship. The 6-week intensive online learning program addresses critical areas such as personal development, career opportunities, mental health awareness, entrepreneurship, funding, and networking. OUR JOURNEY SO FAR Imagine a continent brimming with young, vibrant minds, yearning for knowledge but trapped outside the traditional education system. This was the reality that sparked the Wootlab Foundation, a story that began not with grand visions, but with a simple question: how can technology bridge the education gap and unlock the potential of Africa's youth? Our journey started small. We are a group of passionate individuals, fueled by the belief that every child, regardless of circumstance, deserves access to quality education. We knew technology held the key. We envisioned a platform that transcended physical borders, delivering engaging lessons and valuable skills directly to those who needed them most. The early days were a whirlwind of challenges. We started Wootlab Foundation during the throes of COVID-19, a time when traditional education systems were crippled. Limited resources, navigating unfamiliar tech landscapes, and the added complexities of a global shutdown, it wasn't easy. But the burning desire in the eyes of every young learner we encountered fueled our collective determination. We persevered, a group of passionate individuals united with a common goal. We didn't do this work alone. We were fortunate to partner with key organizations like Microsoft, The National Information Technology Development Agency, GIZ, UK Nigeria Tech Hub and many others. Their unwavering support was instrumental in shaping our platform and ensuring its reach across the continent. The turning point came with the first success stories. A young girl in a remote village, mastering coding. A group of teenagers in a bustling city, launching their social enterprise. These weren't just isolated triumphs; they were testaments to the power of our vision. Word of Wootlab spread like wildfire, igniting a spark in communities across the continent. Today, Wootlab Foundation is a force for positive change, impacting the lives of thousands of young people. Our technology empowers them with the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century, from coding and digital literacy to entrepreneurship and critical thinking. We've witnessed the transformation firsthand: a generation equipped with knowledge, confidence, and the ability to shape their futures. But our story is far from over.
