Candidate Sourcing: Internal Database vs External Sources Many staffing agencies have invested a lot of time and money over the years in building their internal candidate database. However, when speaking with recruiting leaders they state that their teams prefer searching external sources such as social sites and job boards instead. External sources seem inherently competitive. Even with clever search skills, a recruiter who is certain they’ve found their ideal candidate can also be sure the same candidate has been found by several other people. This places more pressure on recruiters—they must pinpoint candidates with greater accuracy, engage quickly, and hope that the candidate is interested in what they have to offer. How do you balance your recruiters continuing to source while establishing a new sourcing function? A dedicated sourcing function in a recruitment business often starts with one person. In some cases, they may stretch to building a small team of 2-3. It makes sense to start small. You don’t want to go all-in on an investment you’ve yet seen the return of. But, this means you can’t throw all your sourcing requirements at such a small team straight away. Your recruiters will still need to source, too. Plus, you must integrate the new function with your existing teams. Internal competition will grow if your recruiters aren’t bought in and continue to do all their sourcing solo. Not only that, you'll see more duplicated efforts across your searches. At this point, you’ve got some options to make sure that this partnership works: 1) The Sourcing function only works on particularly hard-to-fill or exec-level roles. 2) The Sourcing function supports roles past a key milestone. E.g. number of weeks worked, number of profiles reached out to, etc. 3) You build in a sourcing process where the Recruiters do sourcing up to a certain point (e.g. exhaust their direct network and database). After this, they hand it over to the sourcing team. Whichever option you choose, it’s also crucial that the Recruiters and Sourcers form a close partnership. Once proven, you'll be in a position to scale. The sourcing function then takes on more capacity, and this frees up your recruiters even more. Your goal should be that the recruiters who partner with the sourcing function can fill more jobs and bill more. #sourcing #recruitment
