As a Cairo resident, I was surprised to learn that many Egyptians living in the coastal city of Suez regularly consume shark meat, which is what my latest feature for The National News is all about. The story delves into this little-known aspect of Egyptian culinary traditions and its ties to the illegal shark trade. Through conversations with fishmongers and residents at Suez's Al Ansari fish market, I also discovered that many Cairo residents may be unknowingly consuming shark meat in their seafood dishes. The article explores the cultural and economic factors contributing to the persistent demand for shark products in Suez, despite environmental protection laws in Egypt that forbid shark fishing in the Red Sea. I invite you to read the full article at the link below and share your thoughts. Did you know about the popularity of shark meat in Suez? How do you think this local tradition intersects with global efforts to protect shark populations?

This weekend we took a two hour road trip down to Cilento, just south of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. Cilento is known for its superb olive oil thanks to its fertile volcanic. This was the first time we met this producer, but we were welcomed with a warm smile and stories going back 150 years of family history producing olive oil. It filled us with joy to learn about the modern processes today juxtaposed with the ancient ways they extracted the oil that have been used up until recent history. Today, the oil is able to be extracted in a much more efficient way, where even the pit in the middle can be turned into pellets to heat homes in the cold months! Of course today, the ever changing climate gives its own set of drawbacks, with weather becoming more extreme and unpredictable. Last years harvest was less than ideal as a result of untimely storms coming through and knocking an uncomfortable amount of the delicate flowers off the trees before they had the chance to bloom into fruit. It just a testament to how these olive producers have to adapt to change and carry on in good times and bad. This is what is truly so special in our line of work- experiencing second hand the pride and joy that that goes into these artisans’ craft. And the fact that we get to use our platform to share that their traditions still exist in our world. #italiantradition #italianfoodlover #cilento_pic #southernitaly #italianoliveoil #campaniafood #mediterraneandiet

4th August to 8th August, 2024 #JapanBusinessTrip It was our first trip to Japan to meet our Japanese client. We never thought that the trip would be so informative. The Japanese Fish oil business looks lucrative. They produce about 100,000 MT of Fishmeal and 40,000 MT of fish oil from the whole fish. And 100, 000 Mt low protein Fishmeal from fish byproducts. This year's quota for Hokkaido is 359000 Mt of Japanese Sardine fish which divides into two parts. 100, 000 Mt before the Japanese holiday and balance 259,000 Mt divided into 24 fishing vessels equally. Now the Japanese holiday has started. The second season will start at the end of August and last up to 31st October , 2024. They import about 200,000 Mt Fishmeal from Peru, Oman and India. A lot of companies tried the fishery Improvement Program in Japan, but couldn't succeed. I took this challenge to support my clients.
