Tekla has wrapped up its yearly signature event--our "End of School Year" Food Drive. Tekla and 9 other industry partner teams collected 3,844 pounds of food and $13,815 in cash and checks. The donations were distributed to five Pax-area food pantries and will go a long way to help restock the shelves at a time when supplies are critically low. Tekla thanks and acknowledges the leadership and employees of Avian, Eagle Systems, IPT Corp., J.F. Taylor, KAIROS, Mag Aero, ManTech, NSI, and Rollout Systems for their support and generosity. Director of Development - helping to address the immediate housing and food challenges impacting Allegheny County residents
Over the past year, we’ve experienced an astonishing 112% increase in demand at the Oakland Food Pantry. Yes, you read that correctly. Four years after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the question remains: what is driving this significant rise? Two years ago, we saw a surge in need following the reduction of SNAP benefits, but this past year, the impact has been compounded by other economic factors. The cost of living has skyrocketed, especially when it comes to groceries. In Pennsylvania, food prices have surged by an average of 8.2%. Consider the following: a gallon of milk now costs $4.56, a loaf of bread is priced at $3.21, eggs are nearing $4 a dozen, and chicken is approximately $5 per pound. Even for those who budget carefully, a week's worth of groceries for a family of four can easily surpass $100. The result? Supplemental services, like food pantries, have become a lifeline for more individuals than ever before. Food insecurity is no longer confined to the unemployed, elderly, or disabled—it’s affecting a much broader spectrum of people, many of whom were self-sufficient just two years ago. This growing need underscores the importance of community support during these challenging times, for this, I am so thankful for the work my team does every week at Community Human Services!
Our Food Pantry provided essential support to 5,873 unduplicated individuals this past fiscal year—a remarkable 112% increase from the previous year! Operating just 10 hours a week, our dedicated team and incredible volunteers served up to 800 individuals and families, offering various nutritious options, including fresh fruits and vegetables, non-perishable items, dairy products, and meat or fish. A heartfelt thank you to our partners, McAuley Ministries, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, UPMC Presbyterian, and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, for their unwavering support in helping us assist our neighbors facing food insecurity. Interested in supporting our Pantry? Consider attending our annual fundraiser, The Big Share, this fall. Tickets will go on sale this Monday!

Peat, soils apparently accumulate at 1mm per year. With that calculation it means that 1m of peat took approximately 1000 years to form. Peat is such an essential part of the ecosystem that the UK government has introduced a ban on the sale of bagged peat compost, which is popular very popular for container gardens due to its excellence water retention properties. The ban on all peat-based gardening products will be expected to take effect by 2030. It's time to look for sustainable alternatives and protect this essential resource.
“#Peatlands are a type of wetland that plays important roles in the environment, including absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and supporting an abundant array of wildlife.” 🌱 🐾 From providing drinking water to supporting educational activities, peatlands offer numerous benefits to people. Are our chickens free range? The answer is no, because we have predators around that will pick them off easily if we make them truly free range. We keep them in a predator-proof enclosure day and night, and let them out under supervision to forage. "Free range" in commercial egg laying is not very well-enforced or well-defined. When you see those words on an egg carton, it could mean the chickens are still in small cages most of the time, or it could mean they are in cages all of the time, but have more space than might be typical for egg layers. The reality is that if it is labeled "free range" it may not be what you think it is. Someday, there may be more clarity on the definition of free range. There are many things that aren't ideal about commercial egg laying, so we limit our egg use, or use egg substitutes, so that we don't have to buy eggs from commercial operations. The Feeding America network consists of food banks, pantries, meal programs, state associations, and the Feeding America national organization and works together alongside communities to end hunger in America. RSI and DOE Legacy Management contract teaming partners Amentum and TFE are contributing $300,000 to Feeding America to support nine communities adjacent to LM operations. The funds will support nearby food banks in the Feeding America Network. The communities receiving support from the donation include Monongalia and Preston counties, West Virginia; Pinellas County, Florida; Navajo and Coconino counties, Arizona; Grants, New Mexico; San Miguel County, New Mexico; Grand Junction, Colorado; Westminster, Colorado; Hamilton County, Ohio; and St. Charles County, Missouri. #FeedingAmerica

‘I make people cry - while their tears still have potency’. Endangered-Wildlife Poet - a voice for the red listed. Grandfather Who Walks with Nature.
This is the Chapter I want to write in #spywhalepoem #hvaldimir #beluga
We’re just a bunch of squeaky wheels out here. Thanks to your donations we are relentlessly advocating for Hvaldimir so he isn’t forgotten or seen as a “problem” animal. Keeping a team on the ground in times of crisis is mandatory, but the unseen work we do behind the scenes all year round is the work that is making meaningful change. For four years, OneWhale founders have been knocking on doors and getting the attention of government officials. We remind decision-makers that he needs a fair and loving solution. We are very happy to report that this consistent voice is making a difference, and solutions are being discussed and considered at the highest level. Let’s keep up the good work together. Thanks to your contributions and support, we are making an impact on Hvaldimir’s future. Please help us share his story. https://lnkd.in/gTj9xzhg

We understand animals are capable of experiencing positive emotions like joy and excitement. And we also know that they can feel fear, pain, and distress. Recognising animal sentience isn’t a purely theoretical or abstract concept. Suppose we accept that animals can feel pain and distress. In that case, we must take it as our responsibility to minimise experiences that harm animals like factory farming and the wildlife trade and entertainment industries. A small donation can do great wonders for animals.
