PPEC member company WestRock Company has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, outlining its environmental (and social and governance) performance for its fiscal 2023. WestRock is one of the largest paper recyclers in North America and circularity is at the core of their operations. The report outlines how the company works to recover millions of tons of old corrugated containers (OCC) and other grades of paper, and how they use those recovered fibres to make new recyclable paper-based packaging products. We love this below image from their latest Sustainability Report, the Journey of Fiber at WestRock, which illustrates how the company advances circularity. ♻️ Debunking Common Recycling Myths ♻️ 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: “All plastics can be recycled.” 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: Only certain types of plastics are recyclable via curbside recycling. Check with your local hauler to see what’s accepted. 🚫🛢️ 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: “Recycling uses more energy than it saves.” 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: Recycling often uses less energy compared to producing new materials from scratch. 🌿💡 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: "Glass can be recycled indefinitely.” 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: This one is true! Unlike many materials, glass doesn’t lose quality and can be recycled endlessly. 🌟🍾 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: “You can recycle anything with a recycling symbol.” 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: The recycling symbol doesn’t mean the item is recyclable in your area. Always check with your local recycling hauler to know exactly what they accept. 🗑️🔍 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: “Recycling is the best way to manage waste.” 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: While recycling is crucial, prioritizing reduction and reuse is even more important.
