Building a world free from violence against women demands our immediate and unwavering attention. Behind every statistic is a woman whose life has been profoundly altered. We need to reshape our world into one where compassion and respect are practiced daily. It's about teaching respect, empathy, pure compassion, genuine care for others, and conflict resolution as core life skills. Legislation that protects women's rights and punishes offenders is crucial. At an individual level, each of us has the power to effect change. Let's not confine our activism to 16 days. Tomorrow is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.    Women's rights activists have observed 25 November as a day against gender-based violence since 1981. This date was selected to honour the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960.    To date, only two out of three countries have outlawed domestic violence, while 37 countries worldwide still exempt rape perpetrators from prosecution if they are married to or eventually marry the victim and 49 countries currently have no laws protecting women from domestic violence. Today marks the beginning of an annual international UN campaign called 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign begins today, 25 November, and runs until 10 December, on Human Rights Day. Motivated by the UN’s 16 Days of Activism, The Freedom Hub started 16 Days of Freedom, releasing a daily blog to spread awareness and information about ending violence against women and sharing stories of freedom from modern slavery over the course of sixteen days. On this International Women's Day, Cast is celebrating the resilience and hard work of the women on our staff and among our clients. More than 8 out of 10 of Cast's clients are women, and many of them face intersectional oppression that makes them more vulnerable to trafficking. If you are a service provider and would like to learn more about the needs of human trafficking survivors, please visit www.castla.org. Last year, 86% of clients served by Cast were women. Of that number: ▶️88% were BIPOC (specifically, 43% were Black or African American, 29% were Hispanic/Latine, 5% were Asian, 2% were Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 1% were Native American or Alaska Native, 2% were "some other race," and 6% were multiracial and 12% were White ▶️69% of were U.S. citizens. 31% foreign nationals ▶️60% were homeless/unhoused when they first contacted Cast ▶️48% had experienced forced criminality (when traffickers force victims to commit crimes) We are proud to say that 88% of our staff are women who have dedicated their professional lives to fighting human trafficking. The Moose Hide Campaign recognizes that all forms of violence are unacceptable, regardless of gender.
