❌You just can't pay for a Data Analyst boot camp or certification program and expect to be hired because you put six months or a year or more effort of learning. ❌No employer is going to buy that! ✅The only way out is by doing projects! ✅ A project is proof that you have the skills you claim to have on your CV or resume. ✅ Landing a data role is a practical environment and chances of being spoon fed is very low while on the job. ✅You are going to be hired to make everyone's job at that workplace easier not the other way round.

I had a chat with a junior data analyst recently that was completely deflated by the process of applying for a new role. Every job he viewed had hundreds, sometimes thousands of applications. “The competition is too fierce – I’m thinking of changing industries because I’ve had enough”. Now, I’ve mentioned this before. I know it's easy to get bogged down in what can feel like an endless process, but PLEASE do not be put off by applying for roles based on the number of applicants. Why? Let me give you a real-world example. Before Christmas, I posted a job that had very specific requirements regarding level of experience. You needed a deep understanding of the UK banking industry, gained from about 10 years working with (funnily enough) UK banks. Within hours, I was inundated with applications (274 at the time of this post), and can you guess how many were suitable? Not even enough to have a proper game of hungry-hungry hippos. The easy apply function on LinkedIn means that people can get incredibly trigger-happy when firing out applications. Most jobs within the Analytics space will get assaulted with CVs like a digital Piñata. But guess what…. don’t worry about it. If you’re a good fit for the role, believe me – you’ll get a call. Just keep going with it. The call will come. Then this will all just feel like a very distant and stressful dream. 🎉 MERJE #recruitment #hiring #applicationprocess

I have often thought about it - what is it that recruiters or employers want when they tag a vacancy as “entry or graduate level? -Does it mean the job requires no experience and/or qualifications? Just a level of education is all e.g A degree level education or A-level. -Could it be that the role requires no experience but a specified qualification? Eg certified data analyst -Is the pay at minimum wage or lowest market offering only suitable for an entry level? -Looking at the company organogram or heirachy within the company, the opening is at the bottom of the food chain? -Or is it just a scam to hire someone with experience but pay at entry level? I will appreciate thoughts from employees and recruiters alike.

Shout out to this hiring manager for their thoughtful response to my application: "Thank you for your application for the Data Analyst position. Our hiring plans have changed, and we have decided to put this position on hold. I understand this might not be the news you expected, but we are continuously looking and encourage you to apply for other positions that you feel are a perfect fit. "On a side note, you have interesting competencies, and it is clear that you put a lot of work into your application. I feel you would do even better and stand out more if you highlight key points to make your narrative crystal clear (from the hiring manager’s perspective)."

It feels overwhelming to see all the super-qualified people applying to entry-level data analyst job postings. Especially when you don't have a TECH background. But here's a story that should give you career-pivoter's hope 👇 🌄I was hiking last week with a data hiring manager and he explained how he hired his last entry-level position. He didn't actually hire the person with the most data experience. He hired the person with medium data skills, but a strong domain background. He said, "I can teach them the data stuff, but teaching them about the domain would take years" 👉 So apply to data jobs within your domain: Teacher? Apply to education data jobs. Accountant? Apply to financial data jobs. Physical Therapist? Apply to health data jobs. I promise you've got this! Don't give up.

They often: Require a less technical skill set (Advanced Excel only is common) Receive fewer applications from experienced analysts. Offer a higher day rate than a full time role ...and the company are in need of a quick hire Of course, there are some cons to temp roles. The stand outs being: Less job security Fewer in-role development opportunities. A risk to leave a secure position if already employed But… 6-12 Months experience as a Data analyst on your CV will kick start your new career Would you consider a temp role to break into an industry?
