Moral values, already overrated? I saw this post and it made me thinking what took us to this point of accepting cheating as a way of living. Throughout my life, I've been involved in many sport activities. Sometimes as a part of a team and more recently in the individual sports. I always aimed to be the best version of myself, competing against me. I can't lie, pushing the boundaries is not easy and there are no shortcuts to success (legal ones). It crossed my mind to give up so many times and sometimes I did, however, cheating was never on the agenda, no matter how hard it was. The question is - who do you cheat OR rather, who do you want to impress? Is it about social networks and fake recognition? Impressing others to be accepted or recognized? Is it worth it and what would the person in the mirror say? What's your take on it? You don't have to link it to sport achievements, but rather as a way of living.

It's amazing to see my daughter growing, skating, and learning the grind and rigour at a young age. As a parent, witnessing her passion for sports has been an enlightening experience. She faces various challenges when she falls while skating, but each time she gets back up, she is more determined than before. With regular practice, she’s more energetic and has better coordination. Based on my experience, I can tell how engaging in sports at a young age can impact overall growth and development: 1. Participating in sports helps her to interact with peers, fostering teamwork and communication skills. 2. She has learned to celebrate every small achievement, which boosts her confidence. She’s learning to set goals, celebrate her progress, and handle setbacks with grace. This growing self-assurance is spilling over into other areas of her life, including academics and social interactions. As a parent, I couldn’t be prouder. Watching her skate, fall, get up, and try again is a reminder of the invaluable life skills sports impart. Encouraging children to engage in sports from a young age can lay a strong foundation for both physical and emotional growth. It also teaches your child to deal with failures. Last year, my daughter jumped into the varsity swim team tryouts, full of hope and excitement. But sometimes, even with the best intentions, the timing just isn’t right. After the first really tough day in the pool, she decided to step back. It was a difficult choice, and as a parent, it was hard to watch her walk away from something she was really excited about. But I’ve always believed that things happen for a reason, even when that reason isn’t clear right away. This year, she decided to try out again. I could see a noticeable difference in her —a new coach, a supportive group of seniors, and a team spirit that was contagious. She made the team. She’s swimming better and she’s having the time of her life. It’s clear now that last year just wasn’t her year, and that’s okay. Sometimes, we have to go through those tough moments to get to where we’re truly meant to be. It’s a reminder that in both life and work, timing is everything. There are moments when things don’t go as planned, and it’s easy to feel defeated. Those setbacks often set the stage for something greater. Whether it’s in our careers or personal lives, sometimes we need to step back, reassess, and trust that the right opportunity will come when the time is right. When it does, it’s worth the wait. While I knew stepping up to the Board as the head of Social for my triathlon club would be a ton of fun - I was surprised by how many skills and lessons can be applied to my day job, especially when it comes to setting & delivering ambitious plans, all while having fun. Last weekend was our annual training weekend, which is an event I am responsible for and delivered for the first time. With nearly 90 members in attendance and countless memories, I thought I'd pass along a few of my learnings and gratitude here: 🌲 Chase your passions - I love nothing more than being active, being social, and getting outside so a training weekend along the ocean in the woods was a perfect fit for me 🎲 Take risks - We switched up the schedule and tried new things, and they paid off - from having one of our sponsors, DT Swiss, attend from Colorado, to adding a Talent Show 🎤, to asking everyone to introduce themselves over the weekend. Many first time activities were cited as favorites; intros broke the ice, fostering camaraderie and connection among new and tenured members alike 🏓 Be ready to adjust on the fly - The weather paid us no favors but through some advanced planning and coordination, we were able to seamlessly swap activities and roll out plan B for the rainy days 📚 Analyze past experience - Survey responses from last year's training camp shed light on what made the weekend successful and what opportunities there were there to improve this year 👨👨👧👦 Build a team - I can safely say there was absolutely no way I could coordinate and execute 5+ simultaneous activities across 10 time blocks for 90 people alone. Huge shout out to the >20 volunteers who helped before, during, and after the weekend! Articulating what needed to get done and assigning owners up front created role clarity, which limited last minute questions and allowed the weekend to run smoothly 😆 Have fun! - I love that my 'true north' as Social Director is to create an environment for the club to HAVE FUN. This clarity let the questions answer themselves 🕺 Now for a bit of rest, many more fun activities, and a look at this year's survey responses to understand the weekend's success and opportunities for next year! No one in the swim school industry really talks about what to do, when a member of your team approaches you and says "I want to leave because ... "I WANT TO FOLLOW MY DREAMS" However I do something that some might find a bit strange 🤔 Starting from when a teacher first joins us: One of the earliest conversations I have with my team members is about what will happen if they tell me they want to leave or are planning to leave at some point, and I encourage this conversation throughout their time with us. It might seem a bit odd speaking to team members about leaving us. However this is part of my open door policy, it allows us to have an open and professional conversation. Which also aids in a better understanding of both our expectations and opportunities to provide support. And, I might just add, our turn over of teachers is very low, with many team mebers being with us for the full 5 years, almost 6 years we've been operational. So talking about leaving, seems to have the opposite effect 😅 Recently when Daisy (One of our head swim teachers) approached me and said "I'm leaving to pursue a career in Australia" it wasn't a shock. Because we had spoken about her 'exit strategy', hopes and dreams from day one. The expectations we're open and honest. As our head swim teacher, Daisy even helped us find a suitable replacement, being heavily involved in the recruitment process. We have exit strategy in franchising, so why don't we have them in swim teaching 🤷♀️ Your probably wondering what did I say to Daisy when she told me, she would be leaving? The truth... "I'm gutted your going, and I'm going to miss working with you but I support your decision and your dream. Don't be a stranger! Good luck in Australia.. p.s. 🎓Last week in an alumni meeting organized by the BYU-Idaho Career Center, my wife and I had the great opportunity to meet with the president of BYU-Idaho, Elder Alvin F. Meredith III, and his wife, Jennifer Meredith. In this reunion, we were able to meet alumni who graduated 20+ years ago, and we heard about many updates and changes at BYU-Idaho. 🏫 At one point, we talked about some of our favorite things when attending BYU-Idaho, and I couldn’t disagree with any of them. Here are a few that made me love my experience there. 🧑🏫 1. Professors are your mentors - I couldn’t be more thankful for the professors I had. They truly care about your success, and they are willing to take the time to help you so you can succeed in your career. Thank you, Dave Rowe Brian Christensen, and Luke Alley, for being awesome professors and going the extra mile to see students succeed. 🫂 2. The community is awesome - Out of all the places I have lived so far, I’ve never seen a stronger community than the one in Rexburg. Students, faculty, and the residents of Rexburg really help and support each other. If you ever go to Rexburg during winter and your car gets stuck (which probably will happen), all you have to do is wait a few seconds and a few people will be there to help you. ⚒️ 3. Hands-on experience - I loved the practical approach in many of my classes, where we had real-life projects tailored for external businesses. The IBC program at BYU-Idaho is a truly unique experience that teaches so much. 🎉 4. Having fun!!! – Some will say that there isn’t much to do in Rexburg, but here are some of the awesome things I was able to do. I was able to go skiing, ice skating, airboarding, camping, floating the river, mountain hiking, biking, fishing, crawfish hunting, stargazing, kayaking, bridge jumping, and many more! Today, I completed my first Single-Sprint Triathlon with my training team. While it wasn't a renowned event like the Viking, I am celebrating this moment. A year ago, I would never have imagined swimming 500 meters, biking 14 kilometers, and running 5 kilometers all in one go. My life has undergone a complete transformation over the past year. For my children and me, it has been a year of significant changes. Despite these upheavals, I successfully completed a professional development course and poured my heart into a challenging case study. None of this would have been possible without the support of some incredible professionals. Special thanks to Kim Metzen, Nishant Rai, and Paul Coffield. Thanks to LinkedIn and the help from Alireza Shahbaghi and @Jan, I found a new job and successfully completed my onboarding. I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who helped me during this period. For the past three months, I have been balancing a full-time job and family life on my own – and this would not have been possible without a strong network of friends and acquaintances. I am especially grateful to a friend who introduced me to @Reinhard Schreiber and the coaching team at SPRTS last October. My initial goal was simply to learn how to swim freestyle. But I have learned so much more: - To accept my limitations and expand them with patience. - To jump into 15-degree water in 16-degree weather – no excuses! - The value of team spirit and solidarity, such as when a teammate offered me her valuable bike for today's event. - To laugh at myself and accept that my old bike with only one functioning gear can still get the job done. All of this has taught me that you don't have to be perfect to belong. When companies support their employees in pursuing sports activities in their free time, they are investing not only in their health. They are fostering social learning and resilience. This is not a mere perk to retain or reward employees; it is an investment with a clear ROI. A huge thank you to the coaching team for the excellent guidance and countless tips. 🚵♀️🏆🌲 This Sunday, I competed in my first-ever official downhill mountain bike race competition in Alkornoke Bike Park, and it was quite an experience! 🙌 Despite coming in second to last and being beaten by almost 70 other competitors, I'm proud of myself for pushing through. 🤘 But why on earth am I sharing this? Well, it´s because I´m trying to learn it's not just about the outcome, but the entire journey, despite my normal competitiveness in sporting situations. Although this wasn´t my first time visiting the bike park it was quite a new experience in many ways. Previously when I visited this park it was for womens days, but this time there were only 5 female competitors. I also continued to challenge myself by speaking Spanish with the majority of the participants. 🇪🇸 I even tried some new things, like cooking a meal in my slow cooker whilst staying overnight in a hotel. 🍴🏨 Success isn't just about the result, but the individual pieces that come together to make it happen. It's a bit like teaching - like a jigsaw puzzle of variables that you have to put all the pieces together first before any learning can happen. 🧩 Even though I may have "failed" on paper, I've improved as a downhill mountain biker and managed to shave off 20 seconds from my previous attempt on the same course back in 2023. 🙌 My time was 2mins 35 seconds (vs the winner who got 1min 35). Comparing yourself to others rarely works (especially when you´re competing against men in their prime fitness). Plus, I finished the race without any major injuries, as two others had hospital visits. What do your athletes need to do during their summer off-season? -take time off to rest their bodies and their minds -practice their weaknesses -do physical conditioning to protect their bodies from getting injured -think about what prevented them from performing at their best in practice and during games Summer is another off-season for your athletes. Your athletes are excited about getting a break from school. The off-season for your athletes does not mean they take the entire summer off and do not do any sports-related activities. The consequence of your athletes taking the entire summer off is decreasing their chances of getting and keeping an athletic scholarship for college by not improving their game. Your athletes need to take at least two weeks off from practicing physical sports skills and doing strength and conditioning activities. What prevented them from performing at their best during games and giving full effort during practices? Below are common performance issues that prevent athletes from performing at their best in practice and during games. -lack of dedication to the game -lack of confidence -trouble transferring their performance from practice to game day -focusing on game day -nerves -performance anxiety -burnout This is not a comprehensive list. Thought I’d share something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently: hobbies and growing as a professional. I’ve been in working life for about 10 years now. In the beginning, I didn’t quite see how hobbies fit in a CV. I mean, they’re just hobbies, right? Later on I realized how 10 years of basketball helped shape me into a team player, among many other things. And that was just from a childhood hobby. Last year I bought my second sailboat, a 1986 H Artekno, after about 4 years of sailing and sailracing, and a few races into helming (the one steering the boat). Someone I know said I should start my own female crew to race with because H boats are very common and therefore a great (but also very competitive) class to race in. ”Me? A female team?” Was my first reaction. I was just learning the sport myself. Still am. Well, it wasn’t too long before I had started asking around for women to join my team, and by the end of season 2023, I was astonished that I had managed to gather not only the three women I needed but six in addition to myself and the goal had evolved from sailracing to racing in about 30 races between May and September, including the national H boat ranking series, Finnish Championships and trying out for the H boat World Championships. And turns out, as far as I know, we’re the only female H boat sailracing team in the world. Next thing I know I find myself setting up a registered association with a mission of advocating for the mental health of the young, planning sailing events for the summer to introduce young people into a sport that really takes your mind off of everything, being the chairwoman of that association, creating marketing materials and making calls to gather sponsors to fund our mission, and being the leader of a team women on a journey towards challenging the best H boat teams in Finland and maybe even around the world. Taking advantage of the skills I’ve learned in school and at work, and getting even better at them. I’ve always been one for big goals. This one’s massive. Honestly, I’m not sure if we can actually make it into the Worlds in less than one year, but we’re giving it our best shot for sure and learning everything we can about our boat, sailracing and most importantly, working as a team. This week we started a full-on renovation on the boat, and will learn how to sand and paint the hull to make the boat sail faster. In addition to being in what feels like a full-time leadership school right now, sailing and especially sailracing has taught me so much about teamwork, patience (in low winds and teaching others how to sail), perseverance (in hard weather conditions), and humbleness (under the forces of nature, in a sport you can never master 100%).
