First of all, shout out to everybody - brands, creators, causes - who've been banned from social media for far less than this just-released Saint Laurent video featuring Zoe Kravitz shows. Second of all, when every year I live-tweet my reading of the Condé Nast Vogue #SeptemberIssue, and talk about how appalling it is that an industry whose primary target is women but is dominated by men in virtually all leadership creative and design positions (just like advertising!) sells clothes, shoes and purses to us through the male lens - THIS IS WHAT I MEAN. And no, including Jeremy Allen White does not make it all right. I said to the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity audience for my keynote 'How To Change Advertising For The Better, Fast' that I was sick of hearing the phrase 'Sex sells', because whenever that phrase is uttered it refers to sex through the male lens. You may have noticed a trend in my posts this month leading up to Juneteenth! As a Texan and having grown up about 30 minutes from Galveston, we celebrated Juneteenth my entire life! I didn’t even know that people didn’t recognize the significance so It’s inspiring to witness the increased awareness and acknowledgment of Juneteenth by so many organizations and companies. The next step is crucial - ensuring opportunities for candidates of color and leaders of color WITHIN organizations. To take action this holiday, consider the following steps: - Examine: Evaluate how well your organization's leaders and executives mirror your customer base and trending demographic changes and cultural shifts. - Effort: Despite some companies moving away from DEI initiatives, intentional efforts can still be made to foster diversity in personnel, marketing, and even where applicable products/services. In my industry, I’ve seen the largest shift in the SPF category. Once upon a time wearing sun protection for people of color meant also having to have a glorious but NOT gorgeous ashy white cast…lol! Welp, Fortunately advancements in formulations and new brands like Black Girl Sunscreen have completed changed the game! But it wasn’t something that was just inherent, if it was we wouldn’t have had to be ashy white for years…lol! - Evaluate: Seek feedback and input from employees on diversity and access within the company. Similarly, gather insights from customers and stakeholders. Ask the questions and then act on the answers. - Expect: Anticipate opposition as not everyone may understand the significance of celebrating Juneteenth. Often it’s not understood “why” we need people of color in all levels of our organizations, not just entry level. History is often clearest in hindsight. Embracing diversity and inclusivity is a journey that requires continuous effort and reflection. However, in the spirit of progress and inclusivity, it's essential to recognize and respect individual boundaries. Instead of the traditional "Bura na mano, Holi hai" (Don't mind, it's Holi), let's embrace a consent-focused approach to celebrate Holi with respect, understanding, and inclusivity. Here's how we can break stereotypical ways of celebration and make Holi a festival of consent: 1. Respect Personal Space: Before applying colors or engaging in any form of celebration, always ask for consent. Respect the personal space of others and avoid forceful or unwanted participation. 2. Communicate Clearly: Rather than assuming everyone wants to participate in all Holi festivities, communicate openly. Ask others if they're comfortable with color play, water balloons, or any other form of celebration. 3. Offer Opt-Out Options: Create designated areas or zones where individuals who do not wish to participate can feel safe and respected. Offer alternatives like music, dance, or food-centric celebrations for those who prefer not to engage in color play. 4. Educate About Consent: Use Holi as an opportunity to educate about the importance of consent in all aspects of life. Encourage discussions around consent, boundaries, and respect within families, communities, and social circles. 5. Empower Individuals: Empower individuals to speak up if they feel uncomfortable or if their boundaries are being crossed. Encourage a culture where saying "no" is respected and honored. 6. Happy Holi! 🌈❤️🩷🩵💙 This festival teaches us valuable lessons that can be applied not only in life but also in business and culture. One of the most important lessons is to embrace diversity. Holi brings together a multitude of colors to celebrate the arrival of spring and fertility. Without these colors, the festival wouldn't be the same. Similarly, we should embrace diversity in our businesses, whether it's regarding employees or products. Doing so can help optimize returns and reduce the risk of failure. Embracing diversity is also about recognizing and celebrating the differences in individuals, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and physical abilities.
