Does Draftsman get the recognition they deserve in the Engineering industry? Whenever you read any article or attend any award ceremony, it’s all about the Engineers and Architects. Yet without the draftsman who collates all the information from all parties (Engineers, Architects, Clients, Contractors, and Sub-contractors) to develop and produce 3D/2D models and drawings, throughout the whole process of design, build, operation and maintain, often under extreme pressures to meet strict deadlines. Without the skills and knowledge of draftsmen (i.e. Designs, Shop drawings, detailing) the industry couldn’t function. After all most engineering companies have at least one draftsman I think the Engineering industry as a whole needs to improve and recognize the input and importance of all technicians. I have participated in different projects and almost never clients have asked me if I have experience. People who are looking for a collaboration with a draftsman, either don't have time or don't have knowledge. For me there are 2 important points to choose a draftsman (no matter the experience). Point 1: Test if the draftsman can do the job. Test with small jobs. You have to see if the draftsman understands the project. You have to see if he can do simple jobs quickly. You have to see if he knows the program. The key word is Test. Point 2: If the draftsman understands the project, you have to be patient to explain what you want and how you want it.
