Only 27% of the 194 NDCs have strong urban content! A new report of UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), UNDP and UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience (SDU_Resilience) provides an in depth analysis across all NDCs and throws a spotlight on actions that Parties to the UNFCCC and their urban stakeholders can take. Given the importance of urban climate action, considering the report's recommendations in the NDC revisions will have a significant impact towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. Proud to have co-authored this report with Nicola Tollin, James Vener, Maria Pizzorni and the team from SDU. https://lnkd.in/eYpjkDsU

Urban Planner, Resilience, Climate Adaptation & Governance. Consultant in: Risk Sensitive Urbanization I GIS Analysis I Research I Green Urbanism I Policy Analysis I Mentor I Trainer
Global South Cities are experiencing an increasing frequency of extreme climate change events that have significant implications and pose a serious challenge for policymakers to build resilient urban societies. In Africa, considerable effort has been invested in building a climate-resilient society. This study assessed current urban planning and development practices at the city level and evaluated their effectiveness in mainstreaming adaptation strategies to climate change. Some of the key recommendations include: 1. National, regional, and local plans should include explicit consideration of climate change impacts and should establish comprehensive risk assessments and climate adaptation strategies that are flexible and adaptable. 2. Capacity-building programs and training should be established to improve climate change awareness and analysis among urban planning practitioners, policymakers, and the general public. 3. Coordination and cooperation between different stakeholders should be strengthened to ensure the effective implementation of climate change adaptation policies and plans. 4. Urban planning strategies should be climate-proofed with short and long-term climate scenarios to identify areas for improvement and to promote evidence-based decision-making. 5. To finance climate change projects, urban authorities should actively seek out and utilize financial resources from international and national and their funding mechanism. 6. The involvement of the private sector in climate change adaptation initiatives should be encouraged, through public-private partnerships and incentives for environmentally sustainable practices. Special thanks to Parveen Kumar for your invaluable role in making this a reality. I also want to acknowledge Dr. Diana Reckien and Johannes Flacke for their professional guidance during the formative stages. Thanks, Landscape and Urban Planning for hosting our work. A recent analysis highlights a significant gap in our climate action plans: only 27% of NDCs incorporate strong urban content. 💡 This oversight presents an opportunity, especially as over 70 countries have committed to the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP). Integrating urban solutions is not just beneficial; it's imperative for reaching our #ParisAgreement goals.
