Urban areas at the epicenter of crises ⚠️ Our world is facing an alarming number of interlinked crises and our cities are at the frontline of crisis situations and in responding to them. In fact, over 60% of refugees and around half of internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently reside in urban areas. Governments at the local and regional scale play a crucial role in preventing the loss of home and aiding in rebuilding communities. By localizing crisis responses, we can move beyond recovery by addressing crisis-driven displacement beyond short term stabilisation. Join our dialogue on 'The loss of home' at #WUF12 to create sustainable and inclusive solutions that empower communities and transform cities for the better. 🔗 wuf.unhabitat.org/wuf12 👉 World Urban Forum #UrbanCrisis #Displacement #SustainableCities (source: UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency)

Creating socially and environmentally sustainable cities and communities
About us
UN-Habitat is the United Nations entity responsible for developing urban policies and translating them into action to create sustainable cities and communities. Cities are facing unprecedented demographic, environmental, economic, and social challenges. There has been a phenomenal shift towards urbanization, with half of the world's population living in cities. By 2050, almost 70 per cent of the population will reside in cities. This urban growth will be happening mainly in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. In the absence of effective urban planning, the consequences of this rapid urbanization will be dramatic. Urban policies need to change to turn this rapid urban growth into opportunities to create a better quality of life for people. UN-Habitat is at the helm of this change. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to address the issues of urban growth and sustainable urban development.

From congested urban highway, into vibrant green space 🌳 In the 1970’s, Madrid was cut off from the Manzanares river by the construction of the M30 ring motorway - the busiest in the country. In a bid to reconnect the community with the river, the Madrid Río Project was launched in 2004 to turn sections of the motorway into a lush riverside park that extends over 7.5 kilometers. This ambitious urban renewal project buried the highway underground, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy riverfront views, bike paths, and open spaces where there were once only cars and noise. The space was also designed to encourage trees to flourish for plenty of shade and the reengineered riverbank now has containers that can collect the excess water produced by 500 year flood events. Madrid Río now stands as a powerful example of how cities can prioritise people over cars, creating more liveable, sustainable urban environments. As cities around the world look for ways to address similar challenges, our dialogues at #WUF12 will spotlight how local actions, like Madrid's, can inspire sustainable urban transformation globally. On 19 August, #WorldHumanitarianDay pays tribute to the humanitarian workers who have lost their lives or been injured while helping others. It also recognizes the ongoing efforts of aid and health workers who continue to provide life-saving care to those in need. As global crises intensify, their work becomes more essential than ever. This day reminds us of the critical role they play and the importance of standing with them to support their mission. On this World Humanitarian Day, UN-Habitat stands in solidarity with those who tirelessly work to uplift vulnerable populations. By 2050, almost 70% of world's population will live in cities 🏙️ Urbanization has the potential to create opportunities for all, yet many countries have major work to do to meet #SDG11 - our goal to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. To make progress, action is essential. At the upcoming #WUF12, we will spotlight local actions to address the biggest challenges our cities face today, from unaffordable housing to lack of basic services. By localizing the SDGs, we can empower local stakeholders, encourage citizen participation, and make sustainable development more responsive to local needs – positively impacting small communities and sprawling megacities alike. Follow World Urban Forum to join the conversation. (source: Sustainable Development Solutions Network - https://lnkd.in/ebDzDxJm) #ItAllStartsAtHome #SustainableCities #Urbanization
