Wetlands are unique habitats that have been disturbed since paleolithic times. This is something that we could confirm in our work on a wetland area of the Peloponnese where the area started to be modified about 7.000 years ago. The actions related to the management of the area by early inhabitants were so important that they were integrated to one of the most famous Greek myths: Hercules and the Lernaean Hydra. >> https://lnkd.in/eykFZyAn

England is leading the way in its use of environmental and planning regulation to promote biodiversity and the protection of nature, with biodiversity net gain legislation now in effect. Biodiversity net gain is an important method to contribute to the recovery of nature while developing land. It aims to ensure that the habitat for wildlife is in a better state than it was before development. With national environmental legislation in Australia being reformed currently, it is valuable to see what is happening in other jurisdictions and consider what we will do differently in planning and delivering projects in the future. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) legislation just came into effect in England last week. This requires that all habitats, no matter how important, are recognised in the planning system for their value for nature and people. All developers are now required to provide at least a 10% gain on the biodiversity value found on the site prior to development. The European Union is proposing a new Nature Restoration law that would require EU countries to develop national restoration plans. These plans would define the restoration measures required to meet the binding targets set in the law and specify the total area to be restored, as well as a timeline. The specific targets for restoration range from wetlands, grasslands, dunes, rivers and lakes to pollinating insects and ecosystems around forests, green urban space, agriculture and the marine environment. Many of us as environmental consultants will be challenged to up our game in a very short timeframe, which is a good thing. We will do that best by listening to, and learning from, each other. This transformation is undermining the ecological functions of the remaining habitat by preventing free movement of species and promoting biodiversity loss.
