"Some issues with RISC-V do remain, but even these are good for EDA. “Some realization is settling in about verification. Freedom to innovate comes with a great responsibility to verify, and the RISC-V ecosystem will require further maturation to support growth. Will the semiconductor industry be “democratized” by open standard designs – or descend into anarchy?    New simpler processor architectures like RISC-V are contributing to the “democratization” of the semiconductor industry, allowing for faster and cheaper chip design. It makes them ideal platforms for rapid, iterative, and cost-effective R&D efforts. This open approach to processor design will be critical for technologies on the cusp of revolutions in areas like AI, autonomous driving, and space exploration.    Currently, RISC-V is primarily being used by chipmakers to enable low-power applications with less complex computing requirements. Most companies focusing on RISC-V IP and design are not yet very specialized.     But RISC-V is also beginning to contribute to the design of higher-function processors – notably the introduction of a new development board, the HiFive Premier 5500, from leading RISV-V developer SiFive. The 5500 is built for AI and other high-compute applications using a Chinese-made SoC. This reveals RISC-V’s collaborative power even under the murky gloom of US trade sanctions.    As Moore’s Law comes to an end, semiconductors will need to be designed to work in combinations and arrays to continue furthering computational gains beyond what processors have made over the last half-century. This so-called “heterogenous computing” world will be hungry for more and more capable chips.     Developing optimal chip configurations through experimenting and testing different design/production processes will be crucial – tasks for which reduced instruction set architectures like RISC-V are purpose-built. For those who follow Pitchbook, their new report “Vertical Snapshot: Semiconductor Scale-Ups” highlighted SigmaSense as the #1 early-stage Semiconductor company by number of patents. This comes on the heels of an analytical study that ranked SigmaSense #1 in patent quality out of all companies with more than 50 US patents. The quality survey used AI based algorithms to search over 300,000 patents filed with the USPTO during 2023 to identify mistakes in the patents (statistically a good indicator of overall quality).
