Congratulations to Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine students Olivia Williamson, Valery Varela, Juliana Tom, Elizabeth Powell, and Christopher Minami (along with faculty mentor Jeff Norris, DVM, PhD) for their recent publication in Veterinary Evidence! First year students at the CVM create a knowledge summary as part of the Principles of Veterinary Scholarship course that I designed and course organize. The 2nd annual conference of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation is taking place this weekend in Naples, FL, and both Dr. Laurie and Dr. Orenbuch are attending. The conference opened with keynote speaker Dr. Marcellin-Little talking about how far we have come as a specialty of veterinary medicine. Dr. Marcellin-Litte is well known as one of the founders of modern canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. He helped found and continues to teach for one of the veterinary rehabilitation certification programs for animal medical professionals. Two of the main points of the keynote are that we still need to implement much more of what we know. And what is that, you ask? We know how to prevent injuries in dogs and how to manage arthritis and pain through non-pharmaceutical techniques. And what are some of those? Improving strength and balance is one major step. Another is laser therapy. Both are techniques that can be done at home under the guidance of your veterinarian. This is where OPV comes in. Optimum Pet Vitality has courses designed just for you, whether you are a pet parent or a medical pet professional. #optimumpetvitality #doghealth #caninesportsmedicine #caninerehabilitation #rehabVet

Are surgical safety checklists consistently used in veterinary practice? A recent survey of American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) diplomates revealed that while two-thirds currently use surgical safety checklists (SSCs), time constraints and forgetfulness were common barriers to consistent completion. Respondents generally viewed SSCs as beneficial, but those not using them were more likely to see them as a waste of time. To improve long-term SSC uptake, the authors suggest focusing on increased stakeholder engagement and customising checklists to local needs. Understanding these attitudes can guide strategies to enhance patient safety across the veterinary profession. Hello #VetMed! Have you engaged with any of the Educational Sharpenings from the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) and the Veterinary Medical Association Executives? If not, I highly recommend you check them out! I just finished the module on 'Reducing Emotional Reactivity' and found it to be very helpful. The module includes reminders and specific examples on how to identify triggers, set boundaries, find ways to de-escalate intense conversations, and much more. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/grmNUHnt
