In November 2023, thousands of national and international researchers and other experts gathered in Tampa, Florida for the Gerontological Society of America’s (GSA) annual conference. More than ever before, the recent GSA conference included a keen focus on the direct care workforce. Research presented on this critical workforce ranged from turnover in nursing homes and assisted living to workers’ experiences of racism in long-term care, home care workers’ perspectives on their training, strategies to engage direct care workers in research, and more. https://ow.ly/W6hU50QoMvT

Minnesota faces a major challenge: filling nearly 3,200 certified nursing assistant (CNA) positions by 2024. But a promising new program could be the game-changer. RealTime Talent (RTT), in partnership with Medica is launching a unique training approach funded by a $200,000 grant. This program aims to attract and retain CNAs, addressing the critical workforce shortage in long-term care and older adult services. Here's what makes it different: - Collaboration: Employers, community organizations, and training providers work together to design training that meets real-world needs. - Student support: Participants receive contingent job offers, training cost coverage, and ongoing career support. - Focus on inclusion: The program intentionally targets underrepresented populations to build a more diverse workforce. I am proud to share this ad published Nov 21, 1925 in the Saturday Evening Post by Johnson & Johnson. It has hung in my office in a prominent spot for many years and while the photo and some of the language is clearly dated, the underlying message is timeless. Here is what it says: “Confidence in the graduate nurse is well-founded. Trained to meet the high standards of modern practice, her work is an essential supplement to the skill of physician or surgeon, in increasing the chances of recovery and decreasing the period of illness. Wherever she exercised her profession - in homes or hospitals, or in the vital work of health conservation or community welfare - her service is a boon to humanity and an asset to civilization. Where she is, there too, may rightly be a greater confidence. “ In other words…for healthcare to work it takes nurses. A heartfelt thank you too ALL nurses for your extraordinary impact in healthcare. While my time with J&J has come to a close, I will ALWAYS be a passionate advocate for and ally to the nursing profession! 🤗🤗

Education is central to the success of a high performance team. It’s great to see an organization investing in a high performance education program instead of just filling a position and checking boxes.
We have expanded our Education Team with the addition of Jamie Eastman RN EMTP as our first-ever Pediatric/Neonatal Staff Educator. One quarter of Boston MedFlight transports are for newborns and pediatric patients, and this new role dedicates an Education Team member specifically to focus on supporting our clinicians for those transports. Jamie brings a passion for the subject matter and excellent experience at top-tier programs around the country. He is specialty certified in pediatric/neonatal transport and the care of extremely low birthweight newborns. World class clinicians, world class education.

Exciting times ahead
I'm delighted the University of Wolverhampton is establishing a new Medical School for the West Midlands. The University is already a significant provider of ‘key workers’ including nurses, midwives, paramedics and social workers. The addition of undergraduate medical education is a natural and significant extension of our commitment to supporting the workforce needs of the NHS. It is pleasing that our partners from the Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB) and The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust have joined the Medical School Steering Group and will provide their expert advice and support in creating opportunities for local people to pursue a career in Medicine.
