Since the launch of the #CassReview in 2020, the situation for trans children in the UK has continued to decline. In 2022 the UK Minister for Health called for clinicians to look for evidence of “what has caused children to be trans,” The Cass Review was cited by the British government to justify plans to exclude trans people from legislation to ban conversion therapy. True are persistent and relentless advocates to end the inequalities in women's health. This article highlights a part of this problem. We call upon Hon Mark Butler to continue his government’s leadership in women’s health and gender equality. Next on the top 10 list must be decisive action to initiate a comprehensive gender-focused review of the Medicare Benefits Schedule. It is imperative to address and rectify the disparities in healthcare access and outcomes faced by women. By closing this gap, we can ensure that every individual receives the quality healthcare they deserve, regardless of gender. https://lnkd.in/ghRySpef #womenshealth #healthinequalities #medicare #healthequality Gerardine (Ged) Kearney Australian Labor Party

Care about people and try to help, Neurologist by passion, Woman, Transgender, Feminist, Femme, science lover, fashion lover, my opinions are my own.
Abstract Background Since 2016 trans people in the UK, and particularly trans children, have experienced a sustained and escalating campaign to roll back trans freedoms, rights and access to healthcare. A series of legislative, politicized and media-driven campaigns have resulted in the year-by-year worsening of access to affirmative healthcare for trans children in the UK. Aim This study examines publications from the NHS-commissioned ‘Cass Review’ into children’s gender services, seeking to better understand what is happening in trans children’s healthcare in the UK. Methods Inductive and deductive reflexive thematic analysis was applied to a collection of Cass Review publications related to trans children’s healthcare published between January 2020 and May 2023. Results Four concerns are presented and explored: (1) prejudice; (2) cisnormative bias; (3) pathologization; and (4) inconsistent standards of evidence. Each of these concerns impacts the Cass Review’s approach to trans children’s healthcare, with negative repercussions for trans children’s healthcare rights and well-being. Discussion The Cass Review itself can be understood as an example of cis-supremacy, within a cis-dominant healthcare system lacking accountability to trans communities. These findings draw attention to systemic barriers to effective healthcare policy, with relevance for trans healthcare across and beyond the UK. https://lnkd.in/eja2Z7mB

Wyoming has joined the states denying medical treatments to trans youth. Really, it is their attempt to deny the existence of trans youth. These laws present families with a dilemma - stay in increasingly hostile locations or uproot the whole family to the safety of states and communities that are welcoming and provide protective laws for ALL of their children. A MoveIndigo link in the comment section below highlights the states and communities that both welcome these families AND where they can have impactful votes, helping to prevent any federal laws from being passed and shoring up votes in toss-up districts. For those leaving Wyoming, Colorado and Washington are the nearest states with strong protections for trans youth. #transrights #lgbtqrights #moveindigo #elections2024 https://lnkd.in/eRdBBjx4

On this day in history, in the year 1977, the fifteen women in the House of Representatives met together in the Capitol to form the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues. The Caucus discussed issues such as government contracts for women-owned businesses, Social Security and private pension reform, and the importance of child care and job training in moving women off welfare. Some of the early accomplishments of the Women’s Caucus include the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (1978), the Retirement Equity Act (1984), the Women’s Business Ownership Act (1988), the Family and Medical Leave Act (1993), the Violence Against Women Act (1994), and The Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering, and Technology Development Act (1998). Today, the number of women in the House of Representatives has grown from 15 to 126 (as of November 2023), making women 29% of the total genders represented. 🌈 Enhancing Safety and Inclusivity: 5 Strategies for LGBTQIA+ Friendly ASC Environments 🏥 Failing to acknowledge someone’s gender or sexual identity poses a safety issue on many levels. Imagine a scenario where a female patient presents as male and needs an x-ray. A staff member should know how to inquire about a potential pregnancy. Otherwise, a fetus could be at risk, says Kuykendall. "The patient’s dignity may also be at risk if they aren't advised in a way that respects their identity." 📖 Research underscores that individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+ are more likely to encounter discrimination in healthcare. This unfortunate reality leads to further health disparities because poor past experiences can make them hesitant to seek preventive or emergency care. 🚨 But change is possible. Heather Kuykendall, DNP, RN, spearheaded significant changes to policy, patient records, and internal culture for LGBTQIA+ patients and staff at her ASC. Here are five ways Kuykendall suggests any ASC can help create a safer LGBTQIA+ space: 1️⃣ Revise your electronic health record (EHR) to include more comprehensive gender options beyond male and female, as well as fields for pronouns and preferred names. 💻 2️⃣ Empower staff with the knowledge and comfort to communicate effectively with LGBTQIA+ patients and families. Staff should prioritize respecting a patient’s support person, regardless of how that relationship is defined. 💪 3️⃣ Take a proactive and facility-wide stand to support LGBTQIA+ patients and staff. This requires leadership and management to establish a very clear non-discrimination policy. Every team member should embrace these changes, no matter how small, such as including pronouns in employee emails and profiles. 📩 4️⃣ Demonstrate visible support for LGBTQIA+ non-profits in the community throughout the year, not just during Pride Month. 🌈 5️⃣ Encourage all patients to feel comfortable and empowered to express themselves within your ASC. Consider implementing gender-neutral/inclusive restrooms and signage to promote inclusivity. 🤝 🌟 Now, she’s sharing her successes in her poster on the topic at AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2024 in Nashville. 🌟 #AORN2024 #ORNurses #DiversityInHealthcare #LGBTQIA+ #InclusionMatters
