Doctor. Lawyer. Firefighter. Police Officer. Teacher. These are professions often thought of by children when picturing a job that has an impact in the lives of others. Very few, I'd venture, consider "Recruiter." As recruiters, yes, we help companies (our clients) hire employees. But the other side of that is, we help people find jobs. In so doing, we help people establish and grow their career; which is a pretty big deal. Through helping someone advance in their career, we're able to positively affect not only them, but also, for many, their family. We get to make a positive difference in where and how they live, enable them to save and put their kids through college, travel and experience the world, as well as volunteer and donate to causes that are important to them. We may not save their life like a doctor, defend their rights like a lawyer, or rescue them like a firefighter or police officer, but I would argue our impact can be just as profound. What else? What do you find noble about recruiting?

Do you have a need for reasonable speed? Do you enjoy driving? Do you enjoy helping people who can't/don't drive get to places they need to be? Community Care wants to talk to you! Community Care Peterborough and the sibling groups in Lakefield, Chemung, Havelock and Millbrook need drivers who can take their clients to appointments and outings. Imagine being a senior or person with disabilities in Havelock and having an appointment at PRHC or Campbellford, but no vehicle access and no friends or family who can take the day off to get you there. This is where the Community Care groups step in. The whole point of Community Care is to help people stay in their homes, and transportation is definitely part of that. There are some clear requirements for this position regardless of which group you sign with, including Vulnerable Sector Screening, references, and a separate application form. We'll get you to the page so that you can choose the closest location to where you live, and go from there. For people who can't take transit (show us the bus that comes in from Millbrook; we'll wait) or are no longer able to drive themselves, this is a very, very important aspect of them maintaining independence. I chose a career in recruitment because I have a genuine passion for helping others. Similarly, my involvement in rescue work stems from my desire to make a positive impact. PC Conor Fountain, who works in the Abbots Langley Neighbourhood Policing Team, has been Herts officer for over five years. He took a few moments to talk about what policing is really like: Q: Why did you want to become a police officer? A: I joined the police because I wanted to help people – and, to be brutally honest, I wanted to drive fast cars on blue lights! But most importantly, because you get to make a difference to someone’s life when they’re having their worst day, and you get to arrive and essentially make it better for them. Q: Are there many career development opportunities? A: When you join the police you get offered several skill sets and training opportunities – there are so many different ventures you can go down. You could join roads policing, the firearms unit, the dog unit, neighbourhood teams; there are so many opportunities within the police, and you’ll get invested in as a police officer. Q: What attributes do you think make a good police officer? A: To be a good and effective police officer, you need to have thick skin. You need to be able to problem solve, and you need to be able to make decisions on the spot, because you’ll have to do that when you’re responding to someone’s worst day, and you’ll have to try to fix it for them essentially. You have to be a certain type of person to be a police officer – I won’t lie, not every day goes swimmingly, you never know what you’re going to be going to. Being a police officer isn’t easy, it is a difficult job, and you deal with challenges that most people wouldn’t deal with in their day jobs. But we have a really good community here in Herts, we’re like a big family and we look after each other. Q: What are the current entry routes? To all of you still struggling to find work out there… I was incarcerated for 35 years, and worked nearly every day of it for .18 - .60 cents an hour. I learned to upholster, shipping and receiving, ran 5 warehouses, learned woodcraft, toy-making, inventory, ran a library, and so much more. I became a published poet and author, sang and played in bands, became an artist, studied (and practiced) law for over 20 years, and was voted in as Chairman of the Men's Advisory Council ; acting as liaison between inmates and prison administrators. I took classes in conflict management, substance abuse, domestic violence, goal setting, cognitive behavioral therapy, relapse prevention, etc. I earned my Customer Service Representative credentials, and my Linen and Laundry Management certificate there. I worked loosely with the California Public Safety Committee (Senators Polanco and Vasconcellas) and Steve White, of the Inspector General’s office, graduated Defy Ventures as an Entrepreneur in Training, and developed a network of AMAZING mentors There is not enough space here to go on. I came home in 2018, co-founded a community house for returning citizens, within 6 months, at the same time joining the tech startup community at Checkr, Inc (a background check company, strange enough), until sadly part of a mass layoff 5 years later. In 2019, I won an Explorer in Residence Grant from the California Clean Energy Fund. I have lived with heart disease, suffered a stroke, and spent most of 2023 battling cancer. There is no Resume length that can suffice to list my experiences, competencies, or skills. The reason I share this with you is because, in light of all that is going on in the world today, I still have enormous hope for 2025 and beyond. You are important, valuable, and needed; stay the course. 💕
