🌈 Pride Allyship: Fostering Inclusion and Support 🌈 As we celebrate Pride Month this June, let’s recognise the vital role allies play in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Effective allyship goes beyond mere labels; it’s about meaningful actions. Here are three key components to be a good ally: Acceptance: Embrace diversity. Accept individuals for who they are, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Show empathy and understanding. Humility: Recognise that you don’t know everything. Be open to learning and unlearning. Listen to LGBTQIA+ voices and experiences without assuming you have all the answers. Action: Advocate actively. Speak out against discrimination, support others in sharing their stories, and educate yourself about the invisible barriers faced by your LGBTQIA+ peers. But remember, true allyship extends beyond public spaces. It’s about standing up for the community even when they’re not in the room. As we kickoff Pride Month celebrations, it's important to remember that while we've made significant strides towards equality, there's still work to be done. Pride is more than just colorful parades and joyful celebrations; it's about recognizing and addressing the inequalities that persist. Despite the progress we've seen in recent years, many LGBTQIA+ individuals continue to face discrimination, prejudice, and systemic barriers in various aspects of their lives. From unequal access to healthcare and employment opportunities to higher rates of homelessness and violence, the disparities faced by queer and trans folks are stark reminders of the ongoing fight for equality. Our top priority is creating and sustaining a culture of belonging and learning by: ✅ Allocating resources towards DEIB-focused employee development initiatives, inviting external speakers, and providing educational resources to increase awareness of key topics. ✅ Implementing inclusive recruitment and hiring strategies, including sourcing candidates from diverse backgrounds, and forming diverse interview panels to ensure equitable opportunities for all applicants.   As we celebrate Pride, we don’t lose sight of the work that still needs to be done.    Happy Pride Month! 🏳️🌈✨ #PrideMonth #Ultragenyx #Advocacy #Inclusion 

June is a powerful month. Not only is it the start of summer vacation, but also the month when we recognize Juneteenth and Pride (also it's the birthday month of my only nephew and niece- proud Titi 😊). This is a crucial time for companies to step up and not just see these events as days off or to celebrate, but as opportunities to reinforce their commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). As we know, Juneteenth marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is also a day that should remind us all of the ongoing fight for racial equality and justice. Similarly, we celebrate Pride in June to honor the LGBTQ+ community, but also should shine the light on the continued struggle for equal rights and acceptance. How Can Companies Meaningfully Recognize These Events? 1. Educate and Raise Awareness: - Host educational workshops and webinars about the history and significance of Juneteenth and Pride. - Share resources and stories that amplify Black and LGBTQ+ voices. 2. Celebrate and Show Support: - Organize virtual or in-person events to celebrate cultural and identity milestones. -Encourage employees to participate in local or virtual Pride and Juneteenth events. 3. Volunteer and Give Back: - Partner with local organizations focused on racial justice and LGBTQ+ rights for volunteer opportunities. - Offer paid volunteer days for employees to engage in community service related to these causes. 4. Foster Inclusive Work Environments: - Review and update company policies to ensure they are inclusive and supportive of all employees. - Establish or support Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) for Black and LGBTQ+ employees. 5. Continuous Improvement in DEI Practices: - Conduct regular DEI training and make it an integral part of the corporate culture.Implement mentorship programs that support underrepresented groups within the company. - Commit to diverse hiring practices and create pathways for career advancement for all employees. Pride isn't just a month-long celebration—it's a year-round commitment to inclusion and equality. Here are a few ways we can continue to support and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community: ✨ Educate Ourselves and Others: Learning about the history, struggles, and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community helps foster understanding and empathy. While June is often associated with Pride Month, October is equally important as we celebrate LGBT+ History Month. This is a time to honor the contributions and history of the LGBTQIA+ community. Though some countries observe this month at different times, the choice of October is rooted in significant historical events. LGBT History Month was founded in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher. In a bold move, Wilson came out to his students while teaching about the Holocaust to emphasize his personal connection to the individuals targeted during the genocide. At a time when being openly gay, particularly in the workplace, was still very risky - marked by policies like “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” - Wilson’s actions were groundbreaking. October was chosen to coincide with National Coming Out Day which is October 11. As we reflect this month, it's important to recognize the significant contributions of LGBTQIA+ individuals in the workplace and all facets of society. Thanks to pioneers like Rodney Wilson and the countless advocates, we can continue learning, advocating, and becoming better allies. June is Pride Month in most countries around the world. I am grateful for the support our community receives all year, but especially during this month as everything becomes more visible. Let me share my thoughts on what’s important this month, especially for those who are part of our LGBTQIA+ community. Our community asks to be accepted and treated equally, that our sexuality should not make a difference. Before we continue to ask others to show us this basic level of respect, let’s reflect on how much we support others ourselves. As the acronym suggests, LGBTQIA+ is a very diverse group. While it is human nature to look out for others with whom we can identify, let's not get split up into different subgroups any further. Within LGBTQIA+, we have different needs and face different challenges. But who knows better what it means to struggle simply because of who you are? Let’s use our experiences to come closer together and be there for one another. Allyship is incredibly powerful, so why not be an ally from within? Let the gay men be the ally for trans people, or the lesbian women the ally for non-binary teenagers. It always starts with a little bit of openness, curiosity, and simple questions.
