In their recent op-ed featured in The 74, our very own Dr. Wardwell Hunter III and Dr. Marco Nava shine a light on the critical role of leaders of color in education. They unveil compelling findings that underscore the urgency of fostering #DiversityinLeadership. With over half of public school students being children of color, it's alarming that only 1 in 5 teachers and principals share the same racial or ethnic background. This disparity not only impacts representation but also hinders the ability of students to see themselves reflected in their educators. Dr. Hunter and Dr. Nava's insightful roadmap for resilience offers actionable strategies to address these systemic disparities, emphasizing the importance of tailored support for leaders of color. Hey everyone, just had a powerful session at Vanderbilt University that inspired me to reflect on The Power of Culturally Relevant Policymaking in Higher Education. Are our policies truly inclusive and effective in fostering success for all students, especially those from marginalized communities? Culturally relevant policymaking is crucial in creating equitable, empowering, and transformative educational environments. By embracing diversity and uplifting underrepresented voices, particularly Black and Brown students, we can ensure inclusive spaces, foster belonging, dismantle barriers, and nurture a diverse pipeline of future leaders. Let's prioritize policies that speak to the unique needs of our diverse student populations. When we lead with cultural relevance, we pave the way for real, lasting change in higher education. #HigherEd #EquityInEducation #CulturallyRelevant #DiversityAndInclusion #HigherEdLeadership #EducationPolicy #StudentSuccess #BlackExcellence

/Build Community/ As I lead succession activities for the Black Girl Affinity Group, an organization I founded in 2022 at Hawken Upper School, and reflect on early days while preparing to soon pass the torch to a new leader who will carry the mission and organization forward, the first school-wide ice cream social the Black Girl Affinity Group hosted is top of mind (the video attached is from that event). Here are the words I publically shared soon after: “Communities in academic and corporate settings that provide a safe space for underrepresented members to gather are essential and powerful because, at the most basic level, communities connect, empower, and inspire, within and beyond. Moreover, when well-run and organized, communities influence agendas, policies, and outcomes through voice amplification, and barriers to access and success become more apparent once diverse experiences are understood. Then, essential strategies can evolve, including but not limited to plans of action to increase the participation of underrepresented populations in STEM and medicine. For these reasons, I launched the first-ever Black Girl Affinity Group at Hawken Upper School in December 2022. Our programming (a guest speaker series, team building, personal branding, peer mentor circles, member support and advocacy…) has been transformative and fun. Be the change, participate in, support, or build communities for underrepresented populations.” However, more than starting an organization is required. Succession planning and grooming future leaders are critical to organizational growth and longevity. Recommendations: ✅ Publish and update annually a succession plan for critical roles that includes training and shadowing. ✅ Create a deliverables binder or e-file detailing key activities, events, and outcomes. #communitybuilding #changemaker #grassroots #inclusion #affinitygroupsmatter

Parents play a crucial role in advocating for their twice-exceptional (2E) children's educational needs, yet they often face challenges in navigating the system. From struggling to secure appropriate identification to ensuring tailored services for their children's dual exceptionalities, parental involvement is pivotal. However, as students progress through school, parental engagement tends to decline, presenting obstacles, particularly for those with high school students who observe discrepancies in the standard of courses that are offered at their schools. Effective leadership within schools is paramount. The enthusiasm and commitment of school leaders significantly influence the strength of gifted and talented programs and the level of parental engagement. By fostering a supportive environment and facilitating communication between schools and families, effective leadership can enhance program quality and ensure that every 2E child receives the support they need to thrive academically.
