Week17 In 2021 NHTSA reported that speeding was a factor in 12,330 lives lost. For two decades in a row, nearly a third of accident fatalities were caused by speeding. Twenty years of driving over the posted speed, or too fast for conditions, and a litany of other reasons. Speeding is still a leading cause of over half the roadway accidents, with a third of them costing a life. The fact that speeding has been a factor in nearly a third of accident fatalities for two decades highlights the longstanding nature of this issue. Despite efforts to combat speeding, it remains a leading cause of accidents, with a significant portion resulting in loss of life. Over the next few weeks, I will focus on how to change this behavior and make meaningful progress in reducing speeding-related accidents. By diving deeper into strategies such as using data, keeping it simple, a consistent program, and leveraging available tools, you can develop effective approaches for addressing speeding behaviors. In addition to this, celebrating and acknowledging drivers who consistently prioritize safety on the road is a powerful way to reinforce positive behaviors. Drivers who demonstrate safe driving practices are invaluable assets to your organization, and their well-being should be a top priority. Ultimately, ensuring the safety of your drivers and all road users requires a concerted effort and a commitment to proactive measures that address the root causes of speeding. By prioritizing safety, promoting responsible driving behaviors, and implementing effective strategies for behavior change, we can work towards creating safer roadways for everyone. Utah leading thecharge in lowering the legal blood alcohol concentration limit for drivers to 0.05%, and the results are noteworthy. Curious about the impact of this change on DUI rates and public health? I highly recommend checking out Yale Public Health’s latest post that dives into the data and discusses the potential for similar measures in other states. It’s an insightful read for anyone interested in public safety, policy, or the future of our roadways. Thanks to Yale SPH Dean Dr. Megan Ranney for posting!!
In 2018, Utah lowered its drunk-driving limit from .08 to .05 B.A.C. A year later, fatal car crashes had dropped by nearly 20%, per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA. Currently, Utah is the only state in the United States with a .05 drunk-driving limit. The .08 limit was established in 2000, despite some researchers and advocates vouching for the limit to be as low as .05. “The .08 was pretty much a compromise,” said YSPH lecturer Linda Degutis. 🚨BIG WIN for #VehicleSubmersion Awareness! The topic was featured today on Good Morning America, ABC News Live & GMA3, and #AWOS was spotlighted as the future solution to this problem! Massive thanks to Doug Vollmayer Matt Gutman Gordon Giesbrecht Eva Pilgrim DeMarco Morgan and the entire GMA team for shining a light on #vehiclesubmersion, a global issue that senselessly claims thousands of lives, including helpless children. In the US alone, around 500 people lose their lives annually and the numbers will grow with extreme weather events like flood and flash floods. These deaths are preventable, with individuals getting trapped and drowning in their vehicles due to the lack of effective escape solutions offered by cars. A car can rapidly become a #glasscoffin in water unless windows are opened within #1minute. #Submersion demands swift action as children and other passengers may depend on you. That's why technology like #AWOS removes any guesswork by detecting submersion, promptly #lowering #windows, and expediting #emergencyresponse to safety assist passengers. Until cars are equipped with such tech, always remember #SWOC: ✅ Seatbelts Off ✅ Windows Open ✅ Out Immediately ✅ Children First DO NOT: ❌ Call for help until you're out of the vehicle. ❌ Manual tools do not break laminated windows. ❌ Don’t open doors; it will lead to water rushing in faster. ❌ Don’t wait for the compartment to fill or equalize. ❌ Don’t kick out the windshield 🤝 Support, Share to Raise Awareness, Save Lives 🤝 #SavingLivesTogether #visionzero #operationALIVE #drowningprevention #AutomotiveSafetyCouncil Automotive Safety Council #forsafercars #connectedcars #VehicleSafety #publicsafety #emergencyservices #RoadMedic #OVIN Communitech Invest WindsorEssex LiDAR Saving Lives Public-Safety Coalition Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association (APMA) #projectarrow #COVESA #Lidarsavinglives Link to video: https://lnkd.in/ernwhX2x

Safe System Snippet: Dynamic visual obstruction Dynamic visual obstruction is the term for when a moving vehicle blocks another vehicle’s sightlines. Motorcyclists are highly susceptible to dynamic visual obstruction crashes due to their small size and their propensity to be masked by other vehicles on the road network. There are a raft of ways to reduce dynamic visual obstruction risk at intersections, including: - Altering the intersection form (e.g. roundabout or raised intersection) - Fully controlling turns - Slowing vehicles on the approach to the intersection - Altering lane configuration and layout - Improving surface skid resistance --------- Sign up to our mailing list for more snippets and news: https://lnkd.in/gXsAeAa9 #roadsafety #trafficsafety #motorcyclesafety #safesystem #SafeSystemSnippet

According to the National Safety Council (NSC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA, the last two years have marked the largest percentage increase of traffic fatalities in the United States in 51 years. While multiple factors contribute to traffic fatalities, the risk of distracted driving, particularly due to technology, is growing. In addition to mobile phones, more sophisticated entertainment systems and technologies such as route navigation and in-vehicle internet have led to more distraction for drivers. The FICO® Safe Driving Score Team joins the NSC and the NHTSA in reminding everyone we all share the road. This April, and every month, be mindful of cyclists, pedestrians, and other drivers. Together, we can make a difference, and end distracted driving: https://lnkd.in/ggA4sqK #FICOSafeDrivingScore #SafeDriving

Vehicle crashworthiness refers to a vehicle’s ability to protect its occupants in the event of a collision. This encompasses various aspects of safety, including the vehicle’s capacity to deform and absorb energy whilst preserving the integrity of the occupant compartment, and the restraint systems used to help manage occupant movements. Although each vehicle is unique, the crash structure of each car generally adheres to a consistent pattern based on best practices for crashworthiness. In his webinar, Road Traffic Collision Investigator, Ross Clarke (MEng CEng MIMechE), provides an overview of the development of vehicle safety. Ross includes a look at the principles of vehicle structural design and how that has evolved within different marketplaces, the optimisation of modern occupant restraint systems, and child restraint systems (CRS-or child seats) and how they are tested. Register for Ross’ free webinar, taking place on Thursday 8th August at 9:30am, via the link below. https://lnkd.in/ekyhibKb #RTC #RoadTrafficCollision #VehicleSafety #VehicleStrucutralDesign #ChildRestraintSystems

October is Pedestrian Safety Month In 2022, across the United States, there were 7,522 pedestrian fatalities. In Georgia alone, there were 342. As a traffic engineer with an emphasis in safety these statistics are way too high and we all need to do our part to reach the ultimate goal of zero. The graphic below outlines some tips to remember as a pedestrian. As a motorist, it is also important to drive alert and be aware of the presence of pedestrians at all times particularly in school zones and downtown areas. Read more: https://lnkd.in/d3NU3g9A Pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have soared by 57% between 2013 and 2022, thanks in part to the rise of trucks and SUVs with high hoodlines that can cause fatal injuries. To tackle this grim trend, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is stepping in with the first-ever set of pedestrian crash safety standards proposals in U.S. history.

Safe System Snippet: Lane Filtering - Navigating the Pros and Cons In a growing number of jurisdictions, lane filtering has emerged as a legal practice for motorcyclists. This manoeuvre allows riders to navigate through slow-moving or stationary traffic at low speeds, often reaching the front of a congested queue. The potential benefits include improved travel time, increased distance from the platoon of vehicles (thus lessening side swipe type crashes from vehicles), and improved awareness and field of vision for riders. However, there are some cons that shouldn’t be ignored in the policy decision making: Cons: - Motorcyclists can be subject to the ‘first off the pack’ type crashes at traffic signals from both turning vehicles and late signal runners. - They can be unexpected for vehicles entering the roadway from midblock access points (i.e. they are away from the platoon of traffic). - A motorcyclist at the front of a queue is exposed to more rear-end type crashes. Do the pros outweigh the cons? ------------- Find this and more Safe System Snippets on our website- https://lnkd.in/g2khVTy Follow us on LinkedIn Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd. #roadsafety #trafficsafety #motorcyclesafety #safesystem #SafeSystemSnippet
