Why is hands on, real-world experience so essential for students? Robb Berg, Principal of Design Workshop, highlights the importance of shaping the next generation of landscape architects through involvement outside the traditional classroom environment. There is often a gap between the theoretical approach taught in the classroom and the practical application on real projects. "Working for communities and with clients means understanding construction budgets, managing time constraints, navigating material limitations, and many more challenges, all the while trying to create meaningful and impactful work," says Robb. It is important to invest in this upcoming generation of young professionals, and Design Workshop’s Design Week and the Dr. Charles Fountain Internship Program are two examples of how we are providing practical experience for undergraduate and graduate students. To learn more about these programs and the importance of real-world experience for students, click the link below to read Land8: Landscape Architects Network's recent article by our very own Robb Berg. https://lnkd.in/g3SJQKYM #realworldexperience #youngprofessionals #landscapearchitects #internshipprogram #thoughtleadership #involement #practicalexperience #approach #designworkshop

I have officially reached the end of my 12 month internship under the guidance of NPN architects and BZ Three Built Environment Consultants. I couldn’t have asked for a better work place environment as a “fresh out of university” Profesional Architect in the making. As I prepare for the next chapter architecture has for me, I would like to share a few things that I have learnt throughout my internship. 1. Ask! Don’t be afraid to ask for help, that’s how you learn. Be inquisitive, never leave a question unanswered. 2. Patience. Be patient with yourself. You’ve just started your professional career, you’re not supposed to know everything. 3. Draw. If all else fails go back to your drawing board with a piece of paper and a pen or pencil in your hand. I cannot wait to apply this pocket of knowledge as I further seek to learn from everything and everyone around me.

If there ever comes a time when we can manipulate time (let's just ignore how that statement can mess with the mind for now), would I take up the opportunity to do so? The age gap in our team can be up to 2 decades (20 years!!). And obviously it will only increase with time. Typical generational cultural disconnects aside, our respective professional attitudes inevitably also differ. It can be a source of conflict, even though the field of work is clearly the same - in design or architecture. This is further complicated when you bring in another party - the client. How they engage with us, will inevitably also be a reflection of how their own generation deal with matters concerning professional work. It can be complex dynamic! I very often struggle with finding the balance. It seems simple enough: understand the client, understand my team tasked to that project, understand my own professional expectations as someone approaching my mid-40s, understand the whole consultant team. Then give up and dive in with eyes open. Maybe that's all that matters. Treat the passage of time as what it is - something that ceaselessly moves forward, taking us all along for a ride so long as we are mindful, and don't take the minutiae too seriously. Afterall, as my parents used to tell me laughingly, despite my distinct lack of amusement, 'Last time policemen used to wear shorts....'. #prosearchitects #staycoolandfunky #policemenusedtowearshorts https://lnkd.in/ghgnFqNQ
Not many events (other than TOP dates) remind us of the passing of time more than a valued colleague leaving to pursue further studies. Celeste Ng joined us with a Part 1 Bachelor of Architecture from National University of Singapore a year ago on 1 July 2023 with an intention of gaining some experience working in a small architecture practice before furthering her studies with a Part 2 Masters of Architecture. Fast forward a year, after witnessing first hand the ups and downs, highs and fumbles of Prose Architects, she leaves us to embark on another exciting chapter of her life. We wish her all the best and to enjoy her experiences always. Serendipitously, Prani Patton rejoins us after a short internship stint in 2023, now with a newly obtained Part 1 Bachelor of Architecture from Melbourne. In a similar fashion, she will be with us for at least a year, before she furthers her studies with a Part 2 Master of Architecture. Below wefie by Alvin Liau after a team lunch, with the best backdrop we can find in the vicinity. We are open to alternative backdrop suggestions for that lunch/dinner a year later... #claritythroughdesign #prosearchitects #funatwork #selfimprovement

Designing a better future | Architecture student, bells university of technology | Shaping the built environment with passion and purpose.
Day 21 of my 2-month streak with Willy Samuel Designing a Resilient Career: Embracing Acaptability in Architecture 🏗️💪 As an architectural student, I've learned that adaptability is essential in navigating the ever-changing landscape of design 🌐. From unexpected site constraints to evolving client needs, being flexible is crucial in delivering successful projects 🏆. In my studies and internships, I've encountered numerous challenges that required quick thinking and creative problem-solving 💡. Instead of viewing these obstacles as setbacks, I've come to see them as opportunities for growth and innovation 🚀. Adaptability isn't just about responding to change—it's about thriving in the face of it 🔥. By embracing uncertainty and staying focused on the bigger picture, we can: ✨ Develop resilient designs that withstand the test of time ✨ Build strong relationships with clients and collaborators ✨ Stay ahead of industry trends and technological advancements How do you handle unexpected challenges in your architectural journey? 5 Points to keep in mind when applying for Architecture Internships : Part 2 1. Know the Organisation - Be thorough with the company and their work to let them know that you're highly interested in the role. 2. Prepare yourself for the INTERVIEW - Show your willingness to work with the company. Do not negatively talk about the previous organisations if you're applying for a job. It can be a trap!!! 3. Do not apply at the LAST MOMENT - Don't take too much time to apply for internship in the type of company you want to intern with. 4. In-person VISIT - This is highly recommended but for that do not forget to print high quality portfolio print. (Read caption of Part 1 to know more about Portfolios) 5. Accept REJECTIONS - Accept Rejections and do not get discouraged. Instead move on and keep pitching to the companies you want to work with. Learn from your mistakes and sharpen your strengths. Introducing Lizzy, our talented architecture 🛠 intern! Here's a glimpse into who she is: Where are you from? Charlotte, North Carolina Best advice someone has given you? Take one day at a time, the moment you start worrying about the past or the future you stop living in the present. What are you looking forward to the most this year? I am most looking forward to exploring and completing my thesis year at college this upcoming school year. What’s one thing that could instantly make your day better? A warm smile from a friend. Who inspires you? My godmother--she is the most generous person I know, very hardworking and talented but she is so solid in her reliance on God. What’s the most impressive thing you can do? I build guitars. What are you passionate about? Adaptive reuse projects that help house or provide safe spaces for low-income families. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Tacos. Favorite part about the internship? Meaningful conversations with other interns that show me more of God's heart for His creation.
