Thrilled to have the opportunity to share insights on the potential rewards of re-opening past producing mines at this year's PDAC 2024 in Toronto. Throughout my time in mining, I've witnessed the immense potential for substantial rewards that lie within this niche. Investors and stakeholders alike stand to benefit from this lucrative opportunity. However, as Mike Tyson famously said, "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." Re-opening mines comes with risks and challenges, necessitating planning and risk mitigation strategies. I initially wrote this post in the typical “LinkedIn Business Casual” tone we all know, but then I realized I was completely contradicting the point of the post. Here is what I really want to say: I’m pretty damn proud of myself as I write this. When I first heard I was one of this year’s recipients for the CIM-Bedford Canadian Young Mining Leaders Award, my brain immediately went into impostor mode: “How many people applied?” “Does it really matter?” “It’s probably easy to win because it’s a ‘junior’ award.” “I’ve applied for 1000 awards & bursaries this year; it was about time I won something.” All questions and statements that may or may not be true. But it doesn’t matter. Receiving this award made me stop and realize I’ve been missing the point about what leadership means in the mining industry (or anywhere, for that matter). People often ask me about my career goals, and I usually respond with, “I want to eventually rise to a leadership position where I can make a positive change within the mining industry.” Now that I’ve won a leadership award, am I done “rising”? Maybe leadership has nothing to do with how long you've been in the field or what title you hold. Instead, it’s about the impact you make and the integrity you bring to your work. As this award proves to me, leadership can come from anyone, at any stage, through everyday actions and the willingness to drive change. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I won this award at a time when I feel more motivated and driven by purpose than ever. This shift happened because I committed to two core values: authenticity and integrity. That's why I rewrote this post to strip away the LinkedIn jargon and speak honestly (with some help from Chat GPT to make my stream-of-consciousness cohesive enough for LinkedIn). It still feels a bit strange to call myself a “leader” when I don’t know exactly where I’m going. But I’ve learned that true leadership is not about having all the answers—it’s about the journey, the learning, and the commitment to making a positive impact along the way. So, I’m going to continue this path with authenticity and integrity, embracing the uncertainties and opportunities that come my way. Anyone want to come along?

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in ICMM’s Responsible Mining Leadership Forum. The panel (#JustinRowntree, #CharleneWrigley, #AdamMatthews, #GuyBoggs) and I shared our views on how closing and re-purposing assets can help the mining sector earn society’s trust. If the sector is going to have community support for opening new mines we need to demonstrate we can, with partners, deliver on the shared vision for post mining land use. @ICMM #MiningWithPrinciples
