The problematic value proposition gap. There's a foundational difference between ‘what a consultancy wants to sell’ (inside view) and ‘what the prospect wants to achieve’ (outside view). Until consultancies close this gap, they might as well speak Latin because they will remain disconnected. I urge consultancies to transform from ‘here’s what we do’ to ‘here’s what can be achieved for you’. There is a wall that I see many boutique consultancies hit. This wall is preventing their businesses from growing at a sustainable, organic pace. The wall I’m referring to is the inability – or, oftentimes, the lack of strategy and intentional efforts – to move clients past one-off projects into a value-driven long-term relationship. Based on my extensive work with both high-performing as well as struggling consultancies, the ability to develop new clients into long-term engagements makes a world of difference. The Dark Side of Consulting: The 'Bench' Problem In the consulting world, there's a well-known yet often unspoken practice—the 'bench' problem. Many consultancies start strong by introducing senior, highly experienced individuals who wow clients with their expertise. But, what follows can sometimes be less ideal. Once the senior consultant builds rapport, the consultancy might place less experienced team members to maintain higher margins. The issue? The quality of the work may not match what was initially promised, leading to diluted value for the client. Moreover, consultancies often aim to maximize resource utilisation, placing individuals 'on the bench' into projects to keep utilization rates high. However, this can lead to inflated costs, extended timelines, and a diminished return on investment for the client. While not every consultancy operates this way, it's a common issue. The solution lies in transparency and alignment with client goals, ensuring the right people are deployed at the right time—not just to fill a bench seat. What do you think?
